Blu-ray Review: Stargate Atlantis- Fan’s Choice

Good news for Stargate Atlantis Fans: MGM has just released Stargate Atlantis- Fans' Choice on Blu-ray! This single disc release contains  the pilot episode, "Rising" Parts 1 and 2, and an extended version of the series finale, "Enemy at the Gate". These three episodes are presented in glorious high definition and have never looked better!

Rising
When a major discovery in Antarctica leads the way to finding the lost city of Atlantis, a new team of explorers set out into the unknown Pegasus Galaxy on a new adventure! Now Dr. Elizabeth Weir, Major Sheppard, Dr. Rodney McKay, Lt. Ford, and Dr. Carson Beckett and a hand picked team must find a way to save Atlantis while facing off against a new threat to humanity: The Wraith! Is there a way to stop these vampire-like creatures from hunting down humans and using them as a food source? The pilot episode also included a guest appearance by actor Robert Patrick. who plays Col. Summner. This fast paced, action packed pilot episode did a great job setting up what would become an incredible series.

Enemy at the Gate
Five seasons later, the Atlantis Expedition have made great advances for humanity and have successfully fought back against the Wraith. There have also been a lot of changes to the staff of Atlantis. Dr. Weir was replaced by Col. Carter, who was then replaced by Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo). Lt. Ford fell victim to the Wraith during Season 2. Ronon, a solider from another world, was added to cast to replace Ford during season 2. Dr. Beckett was killed during the incredible episode called "Sunday" during Season 3, only to be brought back during season 4 because fans demanded it. Now Todd, a Wraith that Col. Sheppard befriended, has traveled to Atlantis to warn that the Wraith now know where Earth is located…and that they now posses several ZPMs and have integrated them into their own system. This new Super Hive ship will reach Earth soon! The team scrambles to get Atlantis ready to fight and travel to Earth in a last ditch effort to save humanity.

Special Features

Other than the fact that these episodes are presented in 1080p and 5.1 Dolby Digital sound…there are no other features included on this release.

Overall
As I said earlier in the review, these episodes have never looked better. I am however disappointed in the lack of special features or even the number of episodes to be included in this set. Atlantis had a large number of fan favorite episodes and I am surprised that only 3 episodes were included on this blu-ray release. Most collections like this include at least 4 episodes but it seems like MGM wanted to release this set as a type of bookend to the series. This is a nice addition to your Stargate Collection but will ultimately appeal to fans specifically. If you haven't watched the episodes between Rising and Enemy at the Gates, you will be very confused. I highly recommend going back and reliving Atlantis. There will be a complete series set coming out soon on DVD as well so that might be your best bet. But for those of you who need to own everything in HD, check this release out.

ComicsOnline gives Stargate Atlantis- Fans' Choice 3.5 out of 5 series that we look forward to seeing more adventures of since they will be doing a Direct to DVD movie soon!

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
