Not a fan of the Colts or the Saints? Not into watching advertisers pay more money for a thirty second spot than the GNP of most small countries? Or maybe you’re just wondering what you can entertain the kids with while you watch the big game. Well this Super Bowl Sunday you’re in luck, Disney DVD has released Air Bud: Golden Receiver Special Edition just in time.
On the surface, this adorable story is about the basketball playing golden retreiver Buddy, who it turns out can also play football. In addition to the title storyline, however, the film also tells the story of Buddy’s owner, Josh – an 8th grader who is struggling with the fact that his widowed mother is dating again. As both antagonists and comic relief, the film also includes a pair of bumbling, animal-napping circus owners who have set their sites on having Buddy as the main attraction for their circus.
The part of Josh is played by a very talented Kevin Zegers, who was 14-years-old at the time this film was made and already had more than two dozen major roles under his belt. The cast also includes veteran actors Tim Conway, Cynthia Stevenson, Nora Dunn and Robert Costanzo. The part of Buddy is played by four different, extremely talented golden retrievers.
The Special Featurette is an adorable “Sports Channel” look at Buddy’s football career, hosted by an adorable litter of golden retriever puppies as commentators. When this film first came out in 1998, the technology to make golden retriver puppies appear to talk didn’t even exist. It’s an adorable addition to the film and sure to be a favorite with kids!
