SDCC 2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

by Guest Reporter Blake Hill

There’s a new batch of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming to our televisions, thanks to a fresh batch of ooze and newly computer generated sewer tunnels.  That’s right, they’re back in CG, with Leonardo voiced by Jason Biggs, Donatello by Rob Paulson (the voice of Raphael in the original series!), Shawn Aston as the new Raphael, and Greg Cipes as Michelangelo.  Also along for the ride is Mae Whitman, who was the voice of Katara in the Avatar: The Last Airbender cartoon series, now providing the vocals for a 16-year-old April O’Neil who’s more active and in the thick of things with the turtles that her older self.

This new series will be heavy on elements of sci-fi and ninja fascination, with plenty of ooze generated critters and robotic Foot henchmen to provide turtle-fodder.  The cast looks to The Goonies and Three Stooges for influence on how the brothers interact, but the show also has a decidedly Japanese influence, much like the Teen Titans cartoon of a few years back.

The opening sequence has been updated, including a hip new theme song (read: rap based), but it is still recognizable in sections as the theme from the original cartoon.  The opening sequence also shows a number of vehicles making a return from our childhood years, and enemies such as Leatherhead, the Rat King, Metalhead, Krang, and of course The Shredder will be returning in their new CG forms.

The show will be premiering on Sept 29th on Nickelodeon.
