Comic Book Review: Assassin’s Creed 4: Hawk

Assassins’s Creed 4: Hawk is the 4th installment in the comic book series Assassins Creed based on the popular video game franchise by Ubisoft of the same name.  The story centers on Jonathan Hawk and is a continuation of his story from Assassin’s Creed 3: Accipiter.  So you may want to pick up the previous chapter but the story itself is not hard to understand if you have not read part 3.  In this chapter, Hawk continues to investigate the memories of his ancestor Numa Al’Khamsin.  Numa Al’Khamsin was a member of the Egyptian Brotherhood of Assassins during the middle of the 14th century.

The Assassins Creed comic book series from Titan books, is pretty much a different world from the video game series.  Desmond in the book is a more cooperative than he is in the video games where he complains more.  The difference between the video games and the comics can be compared to the Walking Dead.  There is familiarity between the characters and the story in both mediums but they are still their own thing and can be enjoyed individually.  If you are a fan of the series or have purchased the last 3 books than you will definitely want to pick this one up.  The artwork is beautiful and has the standard high quality binding you would come to expect from Titan.

Desmond Miles, the assassin from initial story, is urgently called on another mission. He has tasked the mission of finding the Piece of Eden #24 to Jonathan Hawk.  Hawk sets off on an expedition for the Scepter of Aset.  The artifact is to provide an aura of power to its holder.  The story is told with very little narration boxes as most well written comic books today.  The lettering is legible and colors are fantastic.  The reader can almost feel himself in Ancient Egypt and exploring the seas on pirate ship.  Like the video games, the Assassins Creed comic series makes an effort to capture the feel of its environments and locations without actually being there.  And this installment is no different.

Through Hawk’s findings, he discovers that at the time the Scepter of Isis had been given to the new Sultan, who was founder of the Bahri dynasty. The Templars are also on the trail of this precious artifact through their own agent Vernon Hest.  Assassin’s Creed 4: Hawk ends with somewhat of a cliffhanger as you read the “to be continued” panel on its final page.  You cannot help but anticipate when the next installment will come out.

Overall I would say to go ahead and pick up Assassin’s Creed 4: Hawk especially if you’re a fan of the video game series or just great comic book art and storytelling.  And while you’re at it you can also pick up the previous 3 Assassin’s Creed books off of Amazon.  Reading the previous installments is not critical to understanding this chapter but I am sure you would enjoy part 4 much more.  Pick up your copy today.
