This whole review is going to be on SPOILER ALERT, so please, if you haven’t played through the first two installments, stop now, play them, enjoy how awesome they are, and then come back. Cool? Cool.

After reeling from the revelation that Crane was Lily’s killer from Episode 2, I was pumped to get the action started.  Why do I sound so wrapped up?  Honestly, that’s how good this series is.   I love the comics, and this game does a great job of recreating that world.  Telltale Games creating a unique experience that really feels like an interactive comic.  The ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ nature of The Wolf Among Us really comes into its own in Episode 3.  Every time I made a choice, I kept second guessing on whether that was the right move.

While I enjoyed the first episodes, The Wolf Among Us: Episode 3 is amazingly replayable.  I found myself making multiple save files while playing it.   After the first episode, I noticed that I was trying to make Bigby the nicest guy possible, since (according to the comics) he’s in love with Snow.  Consequently, I was really intrigued that they addressed his brutal nature at heart, and wondered where things were headed.  At one point early in the game, Bigby Wolf finds himself at the wake for Lily and is questioned by her sister about the killer’s identity.  Because I was still riding off the high of finding out about Crane, I ended up divulging our leads to the sister, which made her angry and unreasonable.  As soon as Snow started trying to calm everybody down, it was obvious that I had taken a path I could have avoided.  All of Lily’s friends looked like they were going to become vigilantes, which couldn’t mean great things in the future.  As soon as it saved, I went back to the main menu and started another save file, because I didn’t want things to be permanently stuck in that direction.

For this episode, everything loaded pretty quickly and smoothly, minus one cut scene going into the bar.  The fighting sequences were reserved for the end, but that didn’t kill the amount of tension in The Wolf Among Us. To some degree, the rapid pace of the story was more nerve wracking than the actual button mashing.  The clock constantly counting down made me consider and reconsider my choices of which venue to investigate first, especially after Bluebeard went to Crane’s apartment and altered some evidence.  I like that they made the Tweedle brothers a little more ambiguous, and it was nice to see Flycatcher make an appearance.  The introduction of the Crooked Man was interesting, but almost from left field.  I guess we’ll find out more about him in the next episode.

Near the end, my heart was pounding and I felt breathless, even after I replayed the last 3 chapters. What a total blitz of a ride!  Telltale is doing an amazing job making playable heroin.  I can’t get enough of this stuff.  I’ll definitely be playing The Wolf Among Us all over again tomorrow.
