Video Game Review: The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 3: In Harms Way

by Maju Marfori, Reporter

This review of The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 3: In Harm’s Way is GOING to have spoilers.  So if you have not played the first two installments of the second season, stop and play them first because the story is wonderful and meets the same feel of the comic book and TV series.  You don’t want to miss any of the details to give you the full experience of the story.

The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 3: In Harm’s Way is the third installment in the second season of the Walking Dead video game.  Telltale gives you an interactive experience with a comic book.  Basically, it is a video comic book, but you get to decide the outcome of the story.  You find yourself caught by Carver and brought to their camp, for which Nick and the others tried their best to escape.  Because they were escapees, Carver tells them that they will be going through rehabilitation from what they have done.  If they pass,  they will join the camp once again.  But what the residents of the camp don’t know is that Carter has a darker side to him.  He has no remorse, and doesn’t care for the lives of the people.  He just wants power and order in the camp.  You find Carter doing horrible things.

Carver takes the group to the prison type room in the outside of the camp, where they met up with Reggie, one of the escapees who didn’t make it out of the camp.  He was in charge of keeping the group in line so that he can join the camp again.  The next morning, Sarah was being to talkative in front of Carver.  To teach her a lesson, he made her father Carlos discipline her by beating her.  To the shock of Sarah, he did in replacement of having someone else do it that could possibly kill her.  That same morning, Reggie was in charge of having Clementine and Sarah work in the greenhouse and to make sure they do their tasks.  Due to Sarah’s’ shock of her fathers actions, she was unable to do her assignment.  Clementine did her work for her, in the price of her not ending up doing her own job. When Carver checked on the girls, he saw that they were not doing their responsibilities.  He blamed Reggie and killed him in front of the girls. The story of this episode has gotten darker compared to the first episode, which is about how Clementine finds new friends, as well as in Episode 2, where the group getting to know each other and runs away from the threat of Carver.

This episode is very action packed and has you wondering and excited with all the unexpected outcomes of the story and the choices you have to make.  The character development is amazing.  You really get to see what these people will or is willing to do for their own desires.  I loved this episode because you really get to feel what The Walking Dead is all about.  I loved the action, the suspense, the edge of your seat surprises and the development of the characters and their relationships towards each other.

The gameplay of The Walking Dead is very simple.  You just follow the prompts of the game to help you move through the story line (which made it more enjoyable).  Graphics and visuals were very fluid and smooth, which gives it the modern comic book feel.  Sounds and music give you the vibe of horror, and suspense.  (I enjoyed hearing cursing like adults, which made it kind of funny and reminded me of myself when I was younger.) The Walking Dead Season 2 Episode 3: In Harms Way is for mature audiences only, due to the violence and language, so don’t play around your kids.   They might get nightmares or start talking smack on you…

At the end of this episode, I got such a shock when I had to a make a decision on how the next episode could be and made me think about my decisions. After I made one choice, I second guessed myself and wanted to play it again so I could make different choice.  The game gives you such a great high that it makes you wonder if you made the right choice.  You just want to keep playing it over and over to see which is better.
