Up for review is Sailor Moon: Season 1 Part 1. This nice little package comes with a limited edition booklet, and a cardboard slipcase with space for Sailor Moon: Season 1 Part 2. Season 1 Part 1 contains 6 discs comprised of both the Bluray release and the DVD release. The limited edition booklet gives a synopsis of every episode, lyrics to songs from the series, character break downs, and bonus art content. I would say the booklet alone is a reason to pick up Sailor Moon: Season 1 Part 1.
Before watching the series I had only been familiar with the Sailor Moon manga. I have always been aware of Sailor Moon’s fan base but never understood the appeal until watching the series. For me, Sailor Moon sort of has that Ranma 1/2 vibe going for it. It’s adventure and comedy both rolled into one. It’s fun to watch as a guy, even though the anime itself is geared towards young girls.
I would say Sailor Moon was ahead of it’s time, despite the vintage anime feel to it. The main character Usagi, with the help of a cat named Luna, goes through many of the struggles that most teenage girls goes through in middle school. Learning how to fit it, self-confidence, love, and becoming independent are just some of the themes touched upon each episode. There’s a central bad guy for each season, but in the process, Usagi fights against smaller villains she encounters during the season.
One of the key elements I enjoyed about the show is it’s character development. When Usagi first dons the Sailor outfit, she’s not completely independent. She relies a lot on the guidance of Luna and Tuxedo Mask to help her in the fights. She eventually gets better and also starts to team up with other Sailor girls.
If you like fun and quirky anime such as Ranma 1/2, then I would highly recommend checking out Sailor Moon: Season 1 Part 1. The set is a great introduction to a classic series and should not be missed. If you do pick up Part 1 then I would highly recommend picking up Sailor Moon: Season 1 Part 2 to complete the season, of course. If you are familiar with the show and have seen it, then you should definitely pick up Sailor Moon: Season 1 Part 1 off Amazon today!
