Video Game Review: Resident Evil Revelations 2

Following the release of Resident Evil HD, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a new addition to the excellent franchise.  Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a side series to the main Resident Evil story line that takes place between games in the franchise.  The first Resident Evil Revelations is a story that occurred between Resident Evil 4 and 5.  This next chapter happens after the events of Resident Evil 5 but before Resident Evil 6.  What’s nice about Revelations is that it fills in the gaps of the story while focusing on different characters within the franchise.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 is the story of Claire Redfield and Moira Burton, the daughter of Resident Evil character, Barry Burton.  Claire Redfield has always been a fan favorite since her debut in Resident Evil 2.  She is the sister of Chris Redfield, the STARS protagonist of Resident Evil 5.

Revelations 2  is a divided into 4 weekly episodes that started from late February to the third week of March of 2015.   For review purposes, the copy we have on hand is the PS3 version.  As you can see from the screen shots above and below, the PS3 version is no slouch when compared to the PS4 and XBox One versions.

Episode 1: Penal Colony begins with Claire and Moira meeting up with Moira’s dad Barry.  They are soon captured by masked assailants.  They wake up in an underground prison and you can immediately tell that someone is watching them on camera.  The doors to Moira and Claire’s cells have been unlocked by the person watching.  An element of fear is brought back from the early games as you are limited to ammo.  Like the first Resident Evil, you are encouraged to evade your enemies.  For me, this is a breathe of fresh air compared to the most recent installments which allowed for almost infinite ammo, losing the game’s scare factor.

As for the rest of the game, Episode 2: Contemplation starts with Claire and Moira meeting up with their fellow Terra Save coworkers.  Most of them soon become infected minus Neil, who is the antagonist of this Chapter. Episode 3: Judgement has them confronting Neil who has plans to release the virus.  And finally, Episode 4: Metamorphosis,  has the duo confronting Alex Wesker and learning her back story.  Each chapter flows with great story telling and game play.

Though I prefer to play and own the game with all 4 chapters at once, I respect the episodic format that has made the recent Walking Dead (video game) popular.  This format allows gamers the chance to do a try before you buy approach to gaming while still owning a part of the game.  It also allows developers to release games and receive feedback faster on what customers enjoy.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a wonderful game.  The Revelations series is self contained and can be thoroughly enjoyed without requiring the player to have played the Resident Evil franchise before.  The graphics are better than ever before and the game play is on point.  If you’ve played the first Revelations game, then I would definitely recommend picking up the second game without hesitation.  If you’re on a budget or hesitant about throwing down $39.99 for the whole game, you can purchase the first chapter digitally and pay as you go.  But why get the game in pieces when you can pick your copy of Resident Evil Revelations 2 on Amazon today?
