Book Review: Star Slammers: The Complete Collection

StarSlammers1

By Emil Favila, Reporter

What can you say about the great Walter Simonson that hasn’t already been said?  The legendary Harvey Award winner and Thor artist/writer has released his masterpiece, Star Slammers: The Complete Collection in one beautiful over-sized collection.  If you’ve never heard of “Walt”,  he’s most famous for reinventing The Mighty Thor. Some would say his story arc on Thor is the greatest story ever told for the character.  He also created and introduced Beta Ray Bill during his run on Thor.

StarSlammers2Before Walter Simonson’s claim to fame on Thor, X-Factor, Fantastic Four and Robocop Vs. Terminator, he created Star Slammers.  Star Slammers was his first work, which he created in 1972 as his Rhode Island School of Design thesis.  You never forget about your first love, and Walter Simonson’s passion in this collection shows.

Star Slammers was first published at Malibu, then Dark Horse as mini series books.  The space mercenaries have now found their home at IDW and are here to stay.  For the first time ever, Simonson’s early work of the Slammers is shown from beginning to end.  Star Slammers is a title worthy of remaster.  Walter Simonson’s beautiful artwork is now showcased in beautiful recolor treatment.  The enlarged pages help to emphasize the fluid dialog in this classic space tale.  The Slammers have never looked this good.

What is truly wonderful about this collection is that you get to see Walter Simonson’s transition from his early days to now.  Like fine wine, his art gets better with age.  Artists of today should take notes as they peruse through this masterpiece.  They could learn a thing or two about dynamics and facial expression through Walt’s early and recent work.

If you are a fan of Walter Simonson or great art, I would recommend picking up Star Slammers: The Complete Collection.  If you don’t have all of Star Slammers, then picking up this book is a no brainer. You will gain a better appreciation for his work.  If you do own most of the issues, it’s still worth picking up. Reading it again in this format is worth visiting again.  Pick up your copy of Star Slammers: The Complete Collection now on Amazon.
