Comic Review: Princeless Make Yourself #0

 front cover

by Joe Iconic, Reporter

The beginning of a new chapter for Princeless! Adrienne and Bedelia have checked two of Adrienne’s sisters off of their list and they have three more rescues left to make. But sometimes the hardest fights aren’t with any monsters, but with yourself. Adrienne finally has to face an issue that she’s been struggling with for a long time.

Join Adrienne, Bedelia, and Sparky for a brand new adventure.

Princeless: Make Yourself #0 is the must-get comic to enjoy with the female youngling in your life. Since Princeless’ very first issue, the story has always been an all-ages ode by Jeremy Whitley to sharing with his daughter. As one of many comic book fans who wish to share this love with our daughters, Princeless: Make Yourself #0 is greatly appreciated.  For fans of the series, be warned that there are less dragon aerial acrobatics, fighting pirates, or towers to be conquered.  Princeless: Make Yourself #0 is Adrienne coming to terms with her hair.

I have already heard my nine year old (halfling ranger) make critical remarks about her self-image, an issue I was almost certain would be a tween/early teen conflict. Princeless: Make Yourself #0 provides a great discussion point for body image.   So once, again, thank you Jeremy Whitely for “getting us.” You have demonstrated the fun in comics, the range of this new golden age of our industry, and the perfect vehicle for sharing this love with our younglings.  Like all my favorite issues, Princeless: Make Yourself #0 has (this fan’s favorite) dwarf companion Bedalia.

Guest artist Alex Smith does a really good job of drawing unruly hair and our heroes. The brilliant part of Smith’s touch is that the art is a little less anime-inspired, a little more mature, which is pitch-perfect for the subject matter as well as the tone of this issue.

If you are a fan of Princeless, well, duh, pick up Princeless: Make Yourself #0. If you want an issue of action packed fantasy action with a strong female protagonist, this issue is taking a break from the action, and in the process, makes Adrienne even more relatable.   Many comic fans remember those awesome in-between arcs issues when the X-Men played baseball.   Princeless: Make Yourself #0 channels that same muse for a great story.

Princeless: Make Yourself #0 remains one of the top comics I read with my daughter. Like any of the other Princess story arcs, this issue is a great jumping on point. Reading the previous volumes is not necessary for enjoying this issue.   I highly recommend Princeless for fans of: Avatar the Last Airbender, Princess Ugg, Courtney Crumin, all ages Swords & Sorcery and anyone who can identify with strong themes of empowerment and acceptance. Come and see Adrienne rescue the “princess within” in Princeless: Make Yourself #0.

Joe is a husband, #girldad, and Orphan of Apollo. He has drawn critters since riding the bus in 5th grade, and they have appeared on notes to loved ones, graffiti in a Latin classroom (sorry Rev. Dr Clark!), training slides for work, a newsletter in Alaska, and notes to his wife Tracy, who encouraged him to share them with the world. Contains pop culture references, stuff from the news, but mostly bad dad jokes.
