Comic Review: Harrow County #9

By Ben “Zombie” Bedgood, reporter

If you’re ideal bedtime story consists of the most macabre tales from H.P Lovecraft or Edgar Allan Poe, then this might be the comic for you.

As I started to read this comic, one thing I noticed was a lack of dialog in the first few pages. I found that the lack of dialog did not detract from the comic at all. It seems to actually help emphasize the darkness and macabre nature of this story, helping to prepare you for what is to come. Page after page, I found myself pulled deeper into this dark story, wondering where we are going and how we will find our way there. I was also pleasantly surprised by the lack of slasher blood lust that we see too often in today’s horror genre, which I find unnecessary. This tale seems to walk the fine line of taking the horror genre back to days of true terror and suspense. It was reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s shower scene in Psycho.

The art style I found to be a little rough around the edges. It is not the clean edges and solid colors we have gotten used to seeing in many of the major publications. In fact, it was this rough nature that took me back to the Scary Stories books we bought as kids at the Scholastic book fair. I found that actually helped accent the dark nature and tones of this book.

While I loved the comic myself, and I would love to tell everyone to run out and grab it, I do understand not everyone tries to actively celebrate Halloween every day of the year like I do. It is well written and has a unique art style that accents the story it is paired with perfectly.

I find that due to the niche audience this comic branches towards, I can’t give it a higher rating. Being the classic horror fan I am, I can say this is a series I will be defiantly picking up myself!

Rating: ★★★½☆
