Blu-ray Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete First Season

Legendsby Emerald Smith (Reporter),

The creative minds behind the hit CW shows Arrow and The Flash are at it again. When the world needs saving, Time Master Rip Hunter decides to assemble a team of heroes and villains to face a threat that could mean the end of the world. With the past, present, and future at stake, this motley crew of time travelers must step up to take their place as legends in the DC Universe. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has had plenty of setup over the course of the current seasons of Arrow and The Flash, and fans have been waiting to know if this adventure is worth the wait. Now we have our answer, as DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete First Season is available to own on Blu-ray!

Legends

Episode Highlights:

“Pilot, Parts 1&2”: If you watched this season’s crossover of Arrow and The Flash, you already know a little about the immortal villain known as Vandal Savage. With ties to Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Savage continues to plague the DCTV Universe through the ages. With guidance from Rip Hunter, there is a possibility that this group could stop Savage’s tyranny once and for all. After gathering his would-be team together, Hunter gives the group a chance to reflect on his request for assistance. Some members consult their close friends, while others consult family. Fans will definitely enjoy some of the cameo appearances made in the pilot (with one surprisingly notable absence from the Scarlet Speedster). After some coercing, the team embarks on their journey through time, with their first jump to 1975 to gather intel on the whereabouts of Savage.

“Fail-Safe”: After a failed mission to Soviet Russia, Professor Stein, Ray, and Mick find themselves being held in a Russian Gulag. As Savage attempts to create his own version of Firestorm, Captain Cold attempts to free his associates before they become permanent residents of 1986! This episode featured a great subplot between Ray and Mick and alluded to the possibility of a new surprising friendship.

“Star City 2046”: What happens when Oliver Queen fails his city? The Legends of Tomorrow find out first hand as they travel to a dystopian future where Team Arrow has truly failed. Who is the mysterious Connor Hawke, and what ties does he have with Oliver Queen? This episode also features a fantastic comic-book moment, as we get to see Stephen Amell with the traditional Oliver Queen goatee/beard and robot arm from “The Dark Knight Returns“!

“Left Behind”: After the Waverider suddenly leaves Sara, Ray, and Kendra stranded in the 1950’s, the trio must find a way to cope with their new temporal surroundings. While Ray and Kendra do well with their new situation, Sara, unfortunately, reverts back to her past life and leaves to re-join (or in this case, is it “pre-join”) the League of Assassins. When the rest of the Legends reappear 2 years later, they must attempt to find their missing friends and continue on with their quest to stop Savage. Can they help Sara escape from the clutches of Ra’s al Ghul?

“Destiny”: Captured by the Timemasters, the Legends find themselves at a crossroads as it is revealed that the time keeping force has been manipulating their path from the start. While the Timemasters seek to save the world in the far future, Rip and the rest of the team chose to focus on the past and present and save as many lives as possible from the treat of Vandal Savage. The team opts to destroy the Vanishing Point, and one of the team makes the ultimate sacrifice.

Legends

Cast

Legends of Tomorrow is loaded with an all-star cast of actors from the DCTV Universe, including Brandon Routh (The Atom), Victor Garber (Professor Stein/Firestorm), Caity Lotz (The White Canary), Ciara Renee (Hawkgirl), Falk Hentschel (Hawkman), Wentworth Miller (Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Heatwave), Franz Drameh (Jax Jackson/Firestorm), and Casper Crump (Vandal Savage). In addition to this amazing group of previously established characters, fans are going to love the addition of Arthur Darvill (Doctor Who) as the Time Master known as Rip Hunter. The MVPs of the season are Darvill and Garber, who get quite a bit of character development as the time traveling adventure begins. The most entertaining team-up of the season goes to White Canary, Captain Cold, and Heatwave, who really just don’t give a damn about the rules of time travel…and decide to hit the bar. The romantic development between Hawkgirl and Atom was handled well, and I enjoyed the challenge of them trying to overcome “destiny” in order to be with each other.

Legends

Overall:
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow is the ultimate realization of a comic book fan’s dream come true. Remember when you were young and you were playing with your action figures? At the time, it didn’t matter to you if you had Batman fighting the X-Men, or if the Power Rangers had to team up with Superman to save the day. Legends of Tomorrow embraces the idea of a somewhat random assortment of characters coming together just to see what happens, and the result is a damn good time.

With the impending onslaught of DC Extended Universe Films, the big guns of DC Comics haven’t been readily available for a TV equivalent to a Justice League. Sure, we have seen some amazing crossovers and world-building with Arrow and The Flash, and the live action introduction of some lesser known, but equally important and impressive characters. Legends gives viewers the opportunity to explore the many facets of the DC Universe, including different eras and iterations of characters, in an Ocean’s Eleven-style adventure. While the pacing of the season seemed to be a bit of a challenge, the overall story and settings were handled very well. I look forward to seeing where the Waverider takes our heroes in Season Two.
