Blu-ray Review: The Flash: The Complete Third Season

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Poor Barry Allen. Although he managed to save the multi-verse from the speedster known as Zoom, Barry found himself torn apart over the murder of his father. In an attempt to correct the timeline, Barry returned to the moment of his mother’s death and stopped the Reverse Flash from ruining his world. With his life reset, Barry can finally rest easy…right? The Flash: The Complete Third Season is now available on Blu-ray.

Episode Highlights:
“Flashpoint”: The Flash goes back to square one with the opening of the third season. Barry is living in bliss with his parents, and has finally managed to ask Iris West out on a date. After living the last few years as a superhero, can he be satisfied with being a normal guy? Also, who is the mysterious “Flash” running around the city, and why does he look like Wally West?!? When Eobard Thawne (the Reverse Flash) reemerges in Barry’s life, will he have what it takes to stay in this new world, or will he set things back to the way they were as The Flash?

“Paradox”: Jay Garrick returns! Barry learns that not everything was reset exactly as it was prior to Flashpoint, and he gets a lesson in the Speed Force from The Flash of Earth 3. Why are Joe and Iris fighting? Who is the new CSI named Julian Alpert, and why does he hate Barry? Who is Doctor Alchemy and why does he know about The Rival from Flashpoint?

Killer Frost: Kevin Smith (Clerks) returns to direct this special installment of The Flash. Caitlin’s grasp of reality continues to change, as her new-found powers unleash Killer Frost! Since Doctor Alchemy’s has the ability to give or take powers from Flashpoint, Caitlin seeks him out by any means necessary, which includes taking Julian Alpert hostage! Barry confronts Caitlin, only to learn that she blames him for her situation. Can Barry save his friend before she completes her transformation into a cold hearted killer?

Invasion! – (Part 1 of 3) – Aliens invade Central City! The Dominators have arrived, and it will take a massive team up with all of the DCTV heroes to stop them. Barry enlists the aid of Oliver and Team Arrow, the Legends of Tomorrow, and reach out for assistance from the Girl of Steel herself: Supergirl! Can these super friends work together to save the day? When a secret from Flashpoint is revealed, will it be too much for our heroes to handle?

“Dead or Alive”: With a new Wells comes a new set of problems. H.R. illegally left from his home dimension of Earth-19 and Gypsy is ready to collect the bounty on his head! With their friend at stake, Cisco steps up to take on the inter-dimensional traveller in a fight to the death. Get ready for VIBE!

“Attack on Gorilla City” / “Attack on Central City” – Harry from Earth-2 has been abducted by Gorilla Grodd, and Team Flash must travel to Gorilla City to save him! Our inter-dimensional heroes are quickly captured and taken to the city, and Barry challenges Solovar, the leader of the intelligent gorillas, to save his friends. When Grodd’s true plan stands revealed, Team Flash will need to find a way to stop an invading army of Gorillas before they attack Central City! Even with help from Jesse Quick, Gypsy, and Kid Flash, can The Flash save the day?

“Duet” – The Music Meister makes his live-action debut! When Supergirl is attacked on her Earth, Mon-El and J’onzz reach out to Team Flash for assistance. Barry finds himself whammied as well, and wakes up in an alternate reality where they need to sing to survive. Can Barry and Kara make their way through this musical endeavor and escape before they are trapped forever? This episode features guest appearances by Victor Garber (Legends of Tomorrow), John Barrowman (Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow), David Harewood (Supergirl), Jeremy Jordan (Supergirl), Chris Wood (Supergirl), and Darren Criss (Glee) as Music Meister.

“Finish Line” – The time has arrived. The final fate of Iris West is at hand, and Barry takes on his villainous counterpart to save the woman that he loves. Will Savitar finally merge with the multi-verse to become a God? Can Team Flash save Killer Frost? What role does the Black Flash play in the final showdown?

The Flash Season 3 featured the return of all of the key players, including Grant Gustin (Barry Allen/The Flash), Candice Patton (Iris West), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow/Killer Frost), Carlos Valdes (Cisco Ramon/Vibe), Jesse L/ Martin (Joe West), Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally West/Kid Flash), Tom Cavanagh (Harry Wells/H.R.), Violett Beane (Jesse Quick), and John Wesley Shipp (Jay Garrick/The Flash – Earth 3). The team was joined by Tom Felton (Harry Potter film series) as Julian Alpert, and Anne Dudek (Mad Men) as Tracy Brand.

This season of The Flash continued down the dark road set by the previous season, with Barry having issues letting go of his past and focusing on his future. A visit from Jay Garrick finally instills the fact that you can’t keep altering the past, and Barry is forced to move ahead with the knowledge that he has changed the lives of his friends (some for the better, and some for the worse). While this tonal issue has been addressed by the creative team and cast, it will be refreshing to see the series move back to a more light-hearted approach for the next season.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
