Abrams (Mission: Impossible III, Lost and Alias), producer Damon Lindelof (Lost) and screenwriters and executive producers Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, MI: III) comes a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time, Star Trek, featuring a young, new crew boldly going where no one has gone before. The first three issues of the Star Trek: Countdown mini-series, including the completely sold out Star Trek: Countdown #1, are available now. Issue #4 will be available digitally April 1, 2009 - the same day the print version goes on sale.

Star Trek: Countdown has been one of IDW’s most anticipated titles this year and I’m happy to make it available to as broad of an audience as we can,” said IDW Publishing’s CEO, Ted Adams.

DVD Reviews: Escape to Witch Mountain and Return from Witch Mountain

Movies Escape to Witch Mountain
Years ago, I met Bob Young, a retired TV writer who needed a computer tutor. Once a week I scheduled an hour and a half to go to his home above La Costa, California, but we usually took much longer than that. When we were finished going over what he wanted to learn that week, we'd speak French as best we could remember, look at old home movies, or he'd tell me about his experiences writing for television. I eventually looked him up online and found what he had left out. While he had written for quite a few television shows, he neglected to include that he had written one feature film, one that I and all the kids of my generation had seen multiple times growing up. The next time I saw him, I showed him his entry on IMDB and he was surprised to see how many shows they listed as scripted by him. I mentioned how impressed I was that he had written a film from my youth. I wish I remembered more details. I tried to contact him for an interview to go along with this review, but when I called his number, the young woman who answered claimed that this was her number and she'd had it for twenty years. Emails just bounced, but that's not surprising since I know his old ISP went out of business. I just hope he's okay. He is about to be 85 this year after all.

In 1975, the film based on Robert Malcolm Young's feature screenplay debuted in cinemas, and Tony (Ike Eisenmann - Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan) and Tia (Kim Richards - Black Snake Moan) showed us that the innocence of the 1970s was far enough from the alien paranoia of the 1950s and the mutant hysteria of future decades to where vulgar public displays of supernatural abilities by schoolchildren did not result in said children being immediately whisked off to Area 51 or Level 33.1 at the time.

The first film begins with Tony and Tia being brought to their new orphanage. Tony displays his telekinetic powers in catching a long fly ball in a baseball game, and when the loudmouth bully calls him out on it, Tony flagrantly uses his TK in front of a playground full of kids to defend himself. Tia uses her telepathy to warn and then chastise Tony about this. Soon after, Tia demonstrates her other power, precognition, when she warns a man to not get into his car. Right afterward his car is smashed by an oncoming truck. He is impressed by the children's powers and soon returns with fake papers claiming to be the children's uncle.

Soon enough the children are on the run from those who would exploit them and they hook up with a retiree in an RV who after a movie's worth of adventure, helps them escape to Witch Mountain for real. Once there, they meet their real Uncle Jesse Bene, played by Denver Pyle (The Dukes of Hazzard) and return to their alien civilization.

Extras:
* ALL NEW Pop-Up Fun Facts
* Making the Escape
* Conversations with John Hough
* Disney Sci-Fi
* "PLUTO'S DREAM HOUSE"
* Disney Effects - Something Special
* 1975 Disney Studio Album * Audio Commentary by John Hough, Ike Eisenmann and Kim Richards

ComicsOnline gives Escape to Witch Mountain 4 out of 5 telekinetic power stunts.

Return From Witch Mountain
In the 1978 sequel, it's about 3 years later and the children return to the Mundy world for a vacation. They're dropped off by Uncle Jesse Bene in his flying saucer on the 50 yard line of the Rose Bowl, like ya do, and from there, they are picked up by a cabbie that seems to be made up of equal parts annoying braggadocio and deus ex machina. Naturally he runs out of gas, and the children wander off while he walks back a few blocks to get some gas for SIXTY-ONE CENTS A GALLON! Sadly, the gas prices might very well be the most exciting part of this film for adults.

Tony is captured by the bad guys pretty much immediately after wandering off, as he's too much of a hero and saves the bad guy flunky from the bad guy boss pair, played by Christopher Lee (Dracula 1958, Captain America II: Death Too Soon, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith) and Bette Davis (All About Eve, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?). Okay, so maybe the villains might be even better than cheap gas.

Tia is separated from Tony, having instead taken refuge in the hideout of a "gang" comprised of what seem to be sixth grade boys playing dress-up. One of the boys calls himself "Dazzler" but unfortunately doesn't even have shiny disco skates, much less convert sound to light. Most of the rest of the film, Tia and Tony are speparated, with Tony under the mental control of the dastardly duo and their mind control box. In the end, justice is served, and preteen gangs around the world are a little safer from evil senior citizens bent on world domination.

Extras:
* ALL NEW Pop-Up Fun Facts
* Making the Return Trip
* The Gang's Back in Town
* Disney Kids with Powers
* "The Eyes Have It"
* Lost Treasure: Christopher Lee: The Lost Interview
* 1978 Disney Studio Album
* Audio Commentary by John Hough, Ike Eisenmann and Kim Richards.

ComicsOnline gives Return from Witch Mountain 2.5 out of 5 mind control devices.

 Movie Review: Dismal

Movieskpm writes "So when you‘re failing College Biology what do you do? Study hard? Get a tutor? Date the T.A.? No, we go on an extra credit field trip to The Great Dismal Swamp.

In Dismal that’s what Dana (Lydia Chandler) does, against her domineering boyfriend Brady’s (Brent Lovell) wishes. Teaching Assistant Curt (Tim Morris) leads Dana along with new couple Gary and Shelly (Will Triplett and Capel Kane) and jock Jamal (Jade Arnold) and special friend Eve (Meagan Reedy) in to The Great Dismal Swamp to identify wildlife for extra credit. When the group finds an alligator that has been killed by poachers and partially dressed, they feel something isn’t right even though the park ranger Dale (Bill Oberst Jr.) tells them they are in no danger from the poachers. It doesn’t take long for things to go wrong for the group after that. What ensues is a buffet of terror with a serving of revenge for desert.

Dismal borrows heavily from other movies. The key word is borrows. There are concepts from Hostel, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there’s even a diatribe reminiscent to Otis’ in House of 1000 Corpses. But I stress ’borrows’. This movie feels familiar but fresh and new. Horror directing newcomer Gary King has marked this film as his with a new outlook on classic horror that will be his trademark in films to come. The film work is classically magnificent, the cutaways are just right, and the lighting perfect, so instead of relying on characters coming out of shadows they have some extremely slick writing and camera work to introduce cast. And while the effects could be more polished, like maybe Shelly’s last scene, but Eve's was amazing. This cast of unknown up-and-comers will be ones to watch in the future. They seemed to feel comfortable and right at home in front of the camera and that helps to draw the viewer into the film.

So all that’s left is to thank Fearmakers Studio for letting this future classic be my first pre-released film review. And to everyone else, where do you fall in the food chain?

ComicsOnline gives Dismal 5 extra credit stars out of 5.

DVD Review The Midnight Meat Train Unrated Director's Cut

Movieskpm writes "Before you were born, or the birth of any other human thing, that’s how long, or longer. And now you found us, as only a few before you have. The intimate circle that keeps the secret, we protect and nurture them and order is thereby preserved. It must be done, to keep the worlds separate. You’ll understand soon enough. Now serve, as we all do, without question.

The Midnight Meat Train is the latest adaptation of a Clive Barker, The Books of Blood, short story. This time vegan, Leon (Bradley Cooper - Alias) is struggling for his big break as a photographer, and friend Jurgis (Roger Bart - Desperate Housewives) has introduced him to art aficionado Susan Hoffs (Brooke Shields), who wants intensity from his pictures. This drives him into the subways where besides photographing hoodlums in the act of bothering people, he becomes obsessed with a mysterious gentleman called Mahogany (Vinnie Jones - X-Men: The Last Stand). Between taking pictures and following Mahogany, Leon discovers he’s a butcher on several levels. But why? Who else knows? And there‘s the girlfriend Maya (Leslie Bibb - Wristcutter: A Love Story) who supports his ambitions, but worries when his obsession changes him to the point where he starts eating meat.

The Midnight Meat Train is your standard Clive Barker story put to film. You‘re dragged into the story, with absolutely no idea why anyone is doing the things that are happening, and just like a traffic accident you can‘t look away. And just like the past Barker flicks it’s well worth the watch. How can you pass on apparently senseless slaughter, blood flowing like a mountain stream, implements of the trade used in ways the will make your body parts quiver, and how can you pass up seeing Ted Raimi get bashed so hard his eyeballs pop out.

Bonus Features

Audio Commentary with Clive Barker and Director Ryuhei Kitamura

Clive Barker: The Man Behind The Myth

Anatomy Of A Murder Scene

Mahogany‘s Tale

Widescreen Presentation

English 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio

English and Spanish Subtitles

The first time I watched this movie I thought I had missed something. There were no Cenobites, none of The Breed, and no demons of revenge. Just Leon, Mahogany, and the subway. And another memorable Clive Barker tale on film. Watch it more than once.

Please, step away from the meat.

ComicsOnline gives The Midnight Meat Train 5 subway tokens to hell out of 5.

A Tribute to May Parker aka Spider-Girl

Spider-Manthe_matt writes "Today, a very special Marvel series will come to an end (again). The current series, starring May "Mayday" Parker, ends an amazing run because Marvel has canceled Spider-Girl's current series Amazing Spider-Girl #30. This will conclude the stand alone adventures of our favorite Alternate Reality heroine. Spider-Girl is the longest running series with a female lead that Marvel has ever published!

The character will live on in Spider-Man Amazing Family release, but honestly, who knows how long that will last for. For a character that started off as a What If story, I think she has come a long way. Her first appearance was in What If Volume 2 #105 released in 1998. For those of us who picked up that book when it hit the shelf, we knew right away that there was something different about this character. No one could have predicted that this character would have lasted for more than ten years after her initial appearance.

During the 90's there was this thing called "The Clone Saga" where Marvel tried to convince us that Peter was a clone and that a clone was really Spider-Man. While this story was playing out we also learned that MJ was pregnant with a baby girl...who didn't quite make it through the story. Peter and MJ were denied a daughter (and eventually their marriage). The House of Ideas then pitched the idea "What If they had their daughter and what if she grew up to have her father's powers??!?!?" and with that May Parker became the Amazing Spider-Girl. May's first adventure had her face the newest heir to the Green Goblin Legacy, Little Normie Osborn! Normie is all grown up and not happy to learn that Spider-Man was responsible for his dad and grandfather's deaths. He sets out on a quest for revenge and May and the Parkers get caught in the crossfire. Normie eventually reforms and becomes one of May's supporting cast along with Phil Urich (the 3rd Green Goblin), Felicity Hardy (daughter of Felicia Hardy and Flash Thompson), Jack Jameson (you can figure this one out), Kaine, and many more!

Now you might be asking yourself, "what happened to Peter?" and "why isn't Peter Spider-Man anymore?" During his final battle with the original Goblin, Peter becomes injured and looses his leg during the fight. Peter has dedicated his life to his family and has determined that he will "never" sling webs again (yeah that doesn't last too long...)

This original Spider-Girl issue was such a successful issue for that Marvel decided to create an entire Universe for the character called MC2. This new branding lead to the creation and eventual individual comic book releases of other future versions of classic teams and characters including A-Next (The Next Generation of the Avengers), the Fantastic Five, J2 (The Son of the Juggernaut) and others.

The Amazing Spider-Girl is the second volume of May's stories, as she concluded an incredible run of 100 issues in Volume 1! The series was slated for the chopping block not once, not twice, but atleast three different times. By the time issue Volume 1, issue 60 came around and everyone thought that the book was over. They even did an issue rapping up stories just incase this was May's final bow. Well issue 61 was a huge surprise and even sported the tagline "Spider-Girl: The Series They Couldn't kill!" and then started a new storyline called "Marked For Death". Nuff Said.

Well Marvel, I just wanted to say that I appreciate the fact that you let us have this character for as long as you did. It has been a great ride. This is coming from someone who bought every single issue of this series and was satisfied with EVERY SINGLE ISSUE of this series. You created such a strong, entertaining, and important female character with May and I am very happy to have spent my money on this book month after month. To Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, I salute you. This couldn't have been any better.

We at ComicsOnline hope that Spider-Girl will be back again in a full comic format, and not just as a backup story. May deserves better than that. If you missed out on any of May's adventures we urge you to go out and find whatever back issues you can. At a time when Spider-Man books were not at their best, this one stood tall and stay consistent issue after issue. Don't miss out on this character...because we haven't seen the last of her.

Blu-ray Review: Watchmen the Complete Motion Comic

DC Comicsthe_matt writes " Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months then you are probably aware of the hype that the Watchmen Movie has been getting. Well in case you hadn't read the graphic novel before venturing out to the movies you might want to check out the new DVD and Blu-ray Release of Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic.

This release contains all 12 chapters of the Watchmen in a new animated format. Now you must understand that when I say animated I mean that it is just that...animated. It is not a cartoon. It is like they have cut the characters out of the background of the comic and are just moving them around on the screen. It is not fluid like current animation. It is an interesting way to maintain the integrity of the comic while still doing something new with the imagery. Each chapter is about 15 minutes long and given limited animation by Dave Gibbons, co-creator of the original Graphic Novel. Tom Stechschulte provides all narration and the voices for the series (including the female ones).

I feel that having one person provide all of the voices takes away from this release. It really is like reading the comic as you only have the voice in your head as a narrator, as opposed to having different voices. You picture it one way but hearing someone else narrate it just feels a bit off.

Special features on this release include Watchmen Production Diaries #4 with Dave Gibbons (in HD) and a special Sneak Peek at DC Universe's Animated Wonder Woman DVD release.

After watching this I have an even better appreciation for the book and the new movie. The choices for the actors were really quite perfect. They really looked and sounded the part. Tom Stechschulte just really doesn't do justice to these characters. He doesn't really try to change his voice much between characters...they could have hired some voice actors and done a great job with this but it feels like they just went for the cheap and easy choice. But if you would like to see what was missing from the theatrical release of Watchmen and truly are a fan of the graphic novel then this is worth watching (regardless of the narrator).

ComicsOnline gives Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic 3 out of 5 dead Comedians.

DVD Review: Andy Richter Controls the Universe

TVthe_matt writes " Once upon a time on network prime time TV, sitcoms ruled the entire prime-time landscape. Families use to look forward to sitting down after dinner and watching the hilarious adventures of their favorite TV family and possibly learn a couple life lessons along the way. As time has gone by, these series became too formulaic and the public's interest in them started to wane. Now sitcoms on TV are very scarce and most don't even make it past their first seasons. In order to try and break up the normal formula of how a sitcom is, we started to find shows that took on gimmicks such as That 70s Show, Scrubs and Greg the Bunny.

In 2002, we were introduced to Andy Richter Controls the Universe, a show about a writer named Andy who works for a big company and writes Technical Manuals but he also writes small stories about his life using his overactive imagination. Most of the show is him narrating over his life giving him some personal enjoyment of his drab, dull life he has been forced into. Most of the show comes from his interaction with his co-workers who fill out a lot of the normal office archetypes who Andy then uses and exaggerates in his stories he tells to the viewer.

The best episodes make use of this quite a bit, such as the episode where Andy makes a cartoon character to insert into one of their manuals and the idea is stolen from him... despite it resembling Andy or the episode where Andy gets his supervisor to date another co-worker who has a twin brother just to prove that the twins will try and share her.

Special Features

-Commentary by Andy Richter and Victor Fresco on selected episodes

-How Andy Richter Controlled the Universe...Featurette

-What if Andy Richter Controlled the Universe? Featurette

Overall
In truth the show is very much hit and miss with its jokes and humor style and not for everyone, but for those of you who give this one a shot, you may find a quirky little sitcom which has become a slowly dying breed.

ComicsOnline gives Andy Richter Controls the Universe 3.5 out of 5 shows canceled too soon.

 DVD Review: Marley & Me

MoviesMichelleSG writes "Story
This quippet of a story is an autobiography of a real life columnist in South Florida. It begins on his wedding night with his wife and follows trough the trials and tribulations of a growing family. The first addition to this family is a ‘clearance’ puppy they name Marley. The story that follows is a sequence of anecdotes about their life together. It is an honest look at a typical quirky family that has no idea what they are doing or what they want to be when they grow up. They are also the typical new dog owner, biting off way more than they can chew in the case of Marley the Labrador.

Highlights
The Grogans (Jennifer Aniston as the wife Jennifer, Owen Wilson as husband John) do not take long to show their complete ineptitude as dog owners. Their attempt to stave off having children by owning a dog just proves why many parents today should not be parents. This is a redeeming and reoccurring point in this film and why the audience reached is much wider than one would assume by the title. It’s not just a dog-lover’s movie. It’s a movie that humorously pokes fun at all couples as they grow up together.

One of John’s friends, Sebastian played by Eric Dane, is the polar opposite of John. He remains the single playboy that John never was and scores the jobs that John always wanted. This plays as an entertaining backdrop to a chaotic family life that at points, seems too hard to be worth the effort. Not to downplay the dog in this film, all the characters play a part but Marley, oddly, does not take an overwhelming limelight. Rather he is there as a partner in crime, an integral part of the family unit. At some point Jennifer’s patience is lost with him and, as with many a Labrador owner, she tells her husband to send him to the farm. It is the perfect example of life in a family where, at times, everything just becomes too much. The dog is not sent to the farm since it doesn’t take Jennifer long to realize that the Marley is not ‘just a dog’ to be sent away and all the problems of life will disappear.

Special Features
-deleted scenes

-Finding Marley (casting)

-Breaking the Golden Rule (working with animals and babies)

-On the set with Marley: dog of all trades

-Animal Adoption

-Purina Dog Chow Marley & Me Video Contest Finalists

-Purina Dog Chow Video Hall of Fame

-Gag Reel

-When not to pee (dog behavior film anecdote)

-Trailers

All in all this is a wonderful film that most people will find a common thread with, even if they aren’t ‘dog people’. The relationship between Marley and John, serves as a catalyst for all other life changes, moves, births, and eventual deaths seen in every family. Owen Wilson plays a regular every day guy with out his normal overly goofy personality getting in the way and Jennifer Aniston portrays a stay at home mom even better than many at home wives I know. This is a nod to her acting capabilities since she is most often known for her failed relationships in real life which, sadly, overshadow her quality as an actress. As a previous fan of Friends but not seeing her in much else that she’s done I think she has given a wonderful performance in this film, a very endearing role performed well by her.

ComicsOnline give this a 4 out of 5 star review for all around great quality and entertainment for all age groups and backgrounds.

 DVD Review: Marley & Me

Moviesrecalcitrantbeagle writes "Based on John Grogan’s best selling novel of the same name Marley & Me, is an autobiographical look into the dog eat answering machine world of dog ownership now available on DVD!

Story
The film follows the Grogans through many phases of their family life, from their wedding night, through career changes, house moves, child birth and child rearing. An important phase is the adoption of the titular Labrador puppy, Marley. This adoption takes place prior to the birth of the first Grogan child, and is actually an attempt on the part of the lead character to stall his wife’s biological clock. From the point of the adoption forward, the movie becomes a montage of mostly hilarious, often touchy, and occasionally poignant dog-ownership anecdotes. The viewer witnesses not only the lifecycle of Marley, but perhaps more importantly, the lifecycle of the dog-ownership experience.

Highlights
As John and Jennifer Grogan quickly realize, their “clearance puppy” is no lackadaisical lump of a dog. He is in fact the personification of the popular perception of the Labrador breed. Marley is hyper, willful, quirky and mischievous. He is also loving, loyal, and sweet. John and Jennifer’s ownership foibles are not only entertaining for dog owners, but couched within such comic trappings they will likely tickle the fancy of a much wider audience. The film portrays family growth in a sufficiently realistic manner to not bog down the overall story, but the real feature in this film is the relationship between Marley and his pet human, John.

-Owen Wilson does the script justice, showing well the character’s growth as a dog owner, from the dubious start of a husband fearful of parenthood, to the experienced owner who comes to realize the importance of Marley in his life.

-Jennifer Aniston likewise does a serviceable job with her role, a supporting role to be sure, but far more developed than the “window-dressing” wife they could have used for the film.

-Although it seems a little odd to discuss a dog’s performance as an actor, let alone the performance of the many dogs playing the part of Marley throughout his life, I would certainly be remiss in neglecting to do so. The dogs used for Marley were cute, expressive, and most importantly, captured well on film.

Special Features

Overall Despite my initial reservations, “Ah honey, not another dog movie,” this was an enjoyable little film. We watched it with our 7 year old daughter, who liked almost all of it…quite an endorsement in and of itself. It maintained the balance in focus between the dog-owner story and the owner-life story, weaving them into complimentary aspects of one family story.

DVD Review: Dead Like Me: Life After Death

Movieskpm writes "Remember the reapers? The Dirty Harry meter maid Roxy (Jasmine Guy - A Different World), actress Daisy (Laura Harris - The Faculty), English slacker Mason(Callum Blue - The Tudors), and newest to the grim reaper ranks, toilet seat girl (remember she was killed by a space station toilet seat), Georgia, “George” Lass (Ellen Muth - Dolores Clairborne), with Rube (Mandy Patinkin - Alien Nation) as the leader of this group.

Five years ago, the final installment was the Halloween/ flashback/ serial killer episode, but previously everyone was dealing with some sort of personal crisis. Rube was dealing with unresolved issues from his past, Mason and Daisy had killed a man in self defense, and he became an evil graveling, George was having Halloween flashbacks concerning the serial killer, and Roxy is, well, Roxy.

Now five years has passed and Dead Like Me: Life After Death begins with Der Waffle Haus having burned to the ground, and Rube is missing. Laura Harris is replaced as Daisy by Sarah Wynter (24), but no seems to notice. Rube is replaced by corporate hotshot Cameron Kane (Henry Ian Cusick - Lost), who is more concerned with petty amusements then the business of reaping. And because he isn’t keeping control the reapers make mistakes. Mason begins drinking and stealing during reaps, Daisy begins drinking and loses focus of what’s important, Roxy botches a reap, and George is given a wrong time for a reap and contacts her sister. Then things get really bad before our merry band take action to fix the problem.

Dead Like Me was a quirky, dark comedy shown on Showtime in 2003/2004 and is in syndication on Sci-Fi and Universal HD. The series started with Georgia “George” Lass, college dropout and aimless slacker, returning from lunch to her temp job, when she is killed by a toilet seat from a space station. Just before her demise, she is touched someone, and that same someone assists her with her new role as reaper. Just before someone dies, they are touched by a reaper for the express reason of collecting their souls so they can be guided into their afterlife. The series focus’ on the adventures the reapers have in dealing with having to have lives and jobs, as well as making their reaps on time. Rube receives the list of people that will die, as well as when and where, then he make assignments to the group on yellow post-it-notes, handed out during breakfast at Der Waffle Haus. Other recurring characters worth noting are sister Regina “Reggie“ Lass (Britt McKillip - in the movie), mother Joy (Cynthia Stevenson - in the movie), dad Clancy (Greg Kean), Happy Time temp agency boss Delores Herbig (Christine Willes - in the movie).
Dead Like Me: Life After Death provides closure, especially for George and Reggie, but also sets up for the possibility of further installments. I thoroughly enjoyed this companion piece to the series and feel that if more are made they can fit in seamlessly and not ruin the integrity, and if not, at least there was closure for the characters. If you like the series you must see this.

ComicsOnline gives Dead Like Me: Life After Death 4 re-entering toilet seats out of 5.

 Game Review: Deadly Creatures

GamesErinHatch writes "An Arachnophobe's Review of Deadly Creatures:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH! AAAAAAAAAH! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHH! In short, I am never going to sleep again.

Deadly Creatures is a spooky action adventure game for the Nintendo Wii, developed by Rainbow Games and published by THQ, in which players take control of two creepy characters, a tarantula and a scorpion, who make their way through a section of the Sonora Desert, fighting bugs, spiders, lizards, rats and anything else that gets in your way, getting stronger and gaining abilities as you go. It's kind of a bizarre concept, and while the game can be a little rough around the edges, the design is ultimately reminiscent of some of the best games in the genre.

The story of the game isn't that original: Two men (played by Billy Bob Thorton (Eagle Eye)and Dennis Hopper (Speed) ) go out into the desert searching for lost confederate gold. What is interesting is the way that the story is told, popping back and forth between the perspectives of two badass arachnids: a Tarantula and a Scorpion. The story doesn't really drive the action of the game, but it does provide additional atmosphere, including the feeling that, no matter how tough your character may be, there is still something bigger than you.

Actually, atmosphere is where the game really shines. Superb art direction and level design give the player a bizarre and frightening world to explore, made especially surreal by giving the player a bug's eye view of the world. The 3rd person perspective follows your character up walls and along twisting passages, resulting in some wonderful, mind-bending moments as you try to reconcile the games perspective with your own understanding of the space. The world is pretty linear, though it never feels constricted, and gives you plenty of opportunities to explore the nooks and crannies of the world. Also, the game does reuse areas on occasion, though each time you visit an area you will experience it differently, as you play through it with new, unlocked abilities, or as a different character with a separate skill set.

This is the Wii, so the graphics really can't compare to games on any HD console, but taken on its own, Deadly Creatures looks really good. The creatures are vicious (if a little bit exaggerated) and the levels are great. Also, the creatures are animated very well. Just watching the Tarantula walk slowly makes shivers run up my severely arachnophobic spine. However, though the game is graphically impressive for the Wii, there are a few bugs, mostly minor texture flickering or camera positioning issues. Occasionally I tried to go places that the computer didn't want me to, or hit an odd seam when climbing around and my character would have a quick twitching fit trying to find an appropriate position. While such glitches can break the mood of the game, none of the bugs are really severe, and never effect the gameplay.

While some of the insects and animals that appear in this game look a little more fierce than they might in real life, the sounds the make are ferocious and terrifying: the roars and growls of your tarantula make it sound like a lion. The shrieks of enemies as you defeat them with one of the scorpion's finishing moves is shrill and haunting. While music accompanies many fight scenes, the designers also know when silence is even more effective.

While most of the game is very well designed, there are a few areas that might annoy certain gamers. For example, the game contains so-called "quick time events," sequences where the player is prompted to press a certain button or wave the Wiimote and/or nunchuck in a particular motion or else be faced with certain death... a feature that can be infuriating at times. Deadly Creatures isn't as bad as most games with the feature, as instant death is used sparingly as a punishment and most of the quick time event type instances are totally optional. But if you've been frustrated by this feature before in games like Resident Evil 4 or God of War you should be forewarned.

The game has a very smooth difficulty curve, ramping up appropriately as the game goes on and you gain additional abilities for your creature. At the normal difficulty setting the game provides a good challenge, without getting too frustrating. Save points are also very generously distributed, though there are a few points where I spent time exploring the level and finding collectible grubs and leaf crickets, only to fall to a tough grouping of enemies right before the save point.

According to my Wii's playtime tracker, it took me 9:21 to fully complete the game at normal difficulty, though your mileage may vary. There are hundreds of grubs to find in the game to unlock concept art galleries, and while many of them are found in the normal course of the game, it takes quite a while to find all of them. Also, the generous allocation of save game locations makes it very easy to stop at any time, and play the game in whatever increments you can. You will rarely spend much time waiting for the next checkpoint so that you can put down the game until another time.

Deadly Creatures isn't a perfect game, but it offers a spooky, atmospheric experience that is reminiscent of elements of many other excellent games: The level design and atmosphere of dungeons in the The Legend of Zelda; the acquisition of abilities and level exploration of Metroid; the mind bending layouts of levels in Psychonauts; the sense of scale of Shadow of the Colossus. If you liked those classics and are looking for a game to play, check out Deadly Creatures It may be a little rough around the edges, but Deadly Creatures is a solid and fun action adventure title, and a very worthy addition to the library of any Wii owner.

ComicsOnline.com gives Deadly Creatures for the Wii 4 out of 5 roaring arachnid battles.

DVD Review: The Haunting of Molly Hartley

Movieskpm writes "Your mother has gone crazy and tried to kill you, you’re starting a new prep school and everyone knows about your mom. What could be worse? If you’re Molly Hartley, turning 18.

In The Haunting Of Molly Hartley That’s exactly what‘s going on. Molly (Haley Bennett - Marley and Me) is living in fear of her mother (Marin Hinkle - Two and a Half Men) who is locked away in a sanitarium, not that that fact comforts Molly, who keeps seeing her mom in moments of stress and in her dreams. Her dad (Jake Weber - Dawn of the Dead 2004, Medium) is as supportive as he can, but Molly’s panic attacks leave him skeptical.

School goes as expected, the new friend Alexis (Shanna Collins - Swingtown) is an outcast due to her religious fervor, Leah (Shannon Marie Woodward - The Riches) is the bad influence and a little to rough around the edges to be popular. Joe (Chase Crawford - Gossip Girl) is the boy everyone wants to be and wants as theirs, and Suzie (Annalynne McCord - 90210) is the jealous ex-girlfriend. Dr. Emerson (Nina Siemaszko - The West Wing) is the well intentioned but ineffective school counselor. But all is not as it seems for this cast, and especially Molly. Her 18th birthday is approaching and some people have a special present for her.

The Haunting Of Molly Hartley falls into the cotton candy syndrome, it’s enjoyable while you have it but when it’s gone you want more. This flick left me wanting more plot details, or less and let my imagination run rampant, more intrigue and less stereotypical friends. The only twist was dad’s role in the events and even that was confusing in the end. The flow of the movie was good, but at the end all I could think was “What just happened, and why did it happen that way?”
On a positive note, the majority of the cast gave outstanding performances, most notably Shanna Collins as Alexis the religious outcast who is completely comfortable with her situation.
This is not the worst movie I‘ve seen, but it could have been so much better. It's worth watching if for nothing else than to see the up and comers.

ComicsOnline givesThe Haunting Of Molly Hartley 2 stars out of 5.

Spectacular Spider-Man Season 2: Exclusive Interviews - Randy Jandt & Jen Coyle

Spider-Manthe_matt writes "The Spectacular Spider-Man's second season premiere is coming soon, so ComicsOnline is proud to share more exclusive interviews with the production team! This week we got to briefly speak with Writer Randy Jandt and Director Jen Coyle who worked on Season One's Doctor Octopus-centric episode as well as an upcoming episode in Season Two!

CO: How familiar were you with the Spider-Man universe prior to working on Spectacular?

RJ : I had read some Spider-Man/superhero comics as a kid and had seen the films/tv shows, so I had a general familiarity that most people can relate to. However, in terms of really knowing Spider-Man, the history, characters, stories, etc...suffice to say, I had some catching up to do. Thankfully, having industry stalwarts and comic book experts, Greg Weisman and Vic Cook producing the show, that made a huge difference for me and the rest of the production as well. Give the overwhelming positive response to the show, that (Greg and Vic's) expertise has paid off in spades.

JC: I was actually quite familiar with the Spider-man universe, a friend in high school turned me on to the beginnings of the story and I collected and read the comics until I couldn't stand the way they were drawing Mary Jane any more!

CO: In regards to the Doc Ock episodes : What stands out as a highlight for you? What was your overall goal with the introduction of this character? What was your inspiration for this version of Doc Ock?

RJ: What stands out for me personally, was, as you put it, "The Introduction", as well as the overall character development of Doc Ock. The challenge of course was making something old new again, but more importantly moving forward with the goal of making Doc Ock "New and Improved" while still being mindful and respectful of the history and fan expectation. With Greg Weisman's guidance and direction, I'm very proud of the results.

JC: Ah, Doctor Octopus...gotta admit I've got a sweet spot for the Doctor. Between the fantastic voice talent provided by Peter MacNichols and Sean's great character design, I had a lot of inspiration to begin with....but as far as character goes, Doctor Octopus is a fun one...a classic villain with plots, schemes, and big plans and yet he's witty, sophisticated and not without a sense of style. Here's a villain who's just at home with mass destruction as he would be at, say, the Opera. I think he was admirably played by Alfred Molina in the Spider-man movies, but I'm proud to say our Doc has, at least for me, taken on an identity that is both resonant and true to the original comics yet unique and fresh in our particular Spider-man corner of the universe. He's complex, modern, hyper-intelligent, completely unencumbered by humanity, and though he views society with a derisive contempt he doesn't mind taking the odd moment to enjoy the finer things in life. He's been, hands-down, my favorite villain on the series.

CO: Which episodes/projects are you working on next?

RJ: The show is currently on hiatus pending a pickup. There is so much potential with storylines and characters, it really would be a shame if ths show doesn't continue. Hopefully the folks that make that decision will hear from all the Spectacular Spider-Man fans out there. LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD! :)

JC: I just finished directing on the new prime-time Mike Judge series called "The Goode Family" which is also very fun and smart, but it's worlds away from the Spectacular Spider-man stylistically. It's one of the best things about this business to adapt to new styles constantly, it's a great way to stay limber and not stagnate.

CO: If you could work on any superhero project, what would it be and why?

RJ: The Green Hornet- Though I dont know if he's really considered a superhero in traditional comic book terms. I think it would be a fascinating and a whole lot of fun bringing those characters/stories back to life with a fresh, new spin. Creatively, I also think the Kato character has been grossly underdeveloped and has much more potential than a one-dimensional, Asian Martial-Arts sidekick.

JC: If I could work on any super-hero project at all, hmmm, I'd love to work on Spectacular Spider-man season three of course! It has been amazing to work on Spider-man, I am so proud of it! And I'd really like to see what the producers have up their sleeves story-wise: they also have plots, schemes and big plans...!!! Otherwise, I'd love to work on an animated Watchmen! Watchmen is one of my favorite books of all time and I heard that some animated shorts have been done to accompany the DVD release of the movie...I'm so jealous!! Hope they're good!

Special Thanks to Randy and Jen for taking the time to speak with us.

Stay tuned to ComicsOnline for more exclusive interviews and tie-ins to the premiere of the Spectacular Spider-Man SEASON TWO!"

 Blu-ray Review: Clerks 2

Moviesthe_matt writes "Kevin Smith's first sequel Clerks 2 is now available on Blu-ray. Clerks 2 is the 6th film in the Jersey Chronicles movie series written by Kevin Smith.

Story

The film continues the adventures of our favorite characters Dante, Randal, Jay and Silent Bob. After Randal causes the destruction of the Quick Stop and RST Video rental store, the two men take jobs at the local Mooby's eatery. Even though Dante and Randal have moved to a new location, Jay and Silent Bob are still around and up to their usual antics. The two were busted for dealing drugs and when through drug treatment...so even though they are drug free they still deal to everyone else. Additionally the two must deal with co-worker Elias, the extremely inept teen who Randal has decided to constantly pick on.

We learn early in the film that Dante is planning to move away with his fiance Emma and start living the life he was always meant to lead...but as we (and Dante) know, things don't always go as planned. Dante has formed a unique relationship with Becky, the manager of the Mooby's, to the point where the two of them had a one night stand. Becky is reluctant to see Dante go but tries to cheer him up and help him learn some dance moves (via a nice little dance number on top of the Mooby's building). During the sequence both Dante and Becky make a confession.

Randal (using his infinite wisdom) decides to throw Dante a bachelor/going away party AND to hold it after hours at the store. He enlists the services of a traveling Donkey Show called "Kinky Kelly and the Sexy Stud". During the party everyone finds out that Becky is pregnant (everyone including Emma who shows up unexpectedly) and breaks up with Dante. When the police arrive on site they arrest the guys who are then put in a cell and must await the charges.

Dante blames Randal for everything and the two have a big fight about their friendship. Randal points out how things were much better when they worked at the Quick Stop, and says that the two should go into business together. Jay and Bob offer to fund the new venture with the money they received from their movie deal (see Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back). Upon being freed from jail the men rebuild the old business and resume a piece of their past while having the ability to make changes and have a positive future. Suffice it to say, Dante is supposed to still be there today...and the day after...and the day after that.

Overall

It is very rare when a sequel, let alone a sequel to a comedy, does justice to the original. Most comedy sequels rely on played out jokes and over used character stereotypes to get through the movie. You can tell that this wouldn't be a carbon copy of the original when the film transitions from the classic black and white to being full color within the opening. Clerks 2 does an amazing job of continuing the story of our favorite characters, while actually giving them significant development. When the movie was announced people were very quick to judge. Was there a point to making a sequel to a comedy that came out ten years ago? Would these characters still hold up? Can they do another movie about guys who work in a convenience store and have it be entertaining for new and old viewers? Will fans of Clerks feel that this is a cop out by doing another film? I am pleased to say that this film handles all of those questions and lives up to any hopes and expectations that fans had. These are still the people we know and love, but we get to see that ten years later...and they haven't quite made their own dreams a reality. Although everyone eventually comes full circle to the Quick Stop, they do so with a new enthusiasm as they are now in full control of their lives instead of being told what to do.

ComicsOnline gives Clerks 2 on Blu-ray 5 out of 5 chances to make a really good sequel.

Blu-ray Review: Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Movies"If you ask me nicely, I will Dutch Rudder you for the rest of our lives."

Kevin Smith and View Askew hadn't left the nest of the "View Askewniverse" since Jersey Girl, so what were we to think when he cast yet another hot young actor in his latest departure from his comfort zone? Well firstly, that's a damn funny title. Second, it's got an alluring ensemble cast taking some of the best of Silent Bob's Jersey cohorts and pairing them with an awesome sampling of geek pop culture and other hip actors.

Fluffers:
Seth Rogen (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up) stars as Zack Brown alongside Elizabeth Banks (Spider-Man I-III, The 40 Year Old Virgin) Miriam Linky. Friends and roommates since high school, the platonic pair attend their 10-year reunion at their high school that's close enough to walk to. There, Zack runs into Brandon St. Randy (Justin Long - Die Hard 4, Accepted, "I'm a Mac..."), a gay porn star who reveals that he didn't go to school there, he's the boyfriend of alpha jock Bobby Long (Brandon Routh - Superman Returns, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) that Miri's trying to seduce across the gym floor. Miri is crushed that her plans are all for naught, but when they return home to find their utilities shut off due to unpaid bills, Zack is inspired to make amateur porn of their own to get our of their financial crisis. They draft coffee shop coworker Delaney (Craig Robinson - The Office, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian) and get to work gathering additional cast and crew including director of photography Deacon (Jeff Anderson - Clerks, Clerks II), Lester the Molester Cockenschtuff (Jason Mewes - all the View Askewniverse films from Clerks to Clerks II), stripper Stacey (Katie Morgan - Whore of the Rings II, Sex Trek: Where No Man Has Cum B4, Fleshdance, The Erotic Ghost Whisperer), stag party entertainer "Bubbles" (Traci Lords - Swedish Erotica 57, Profiler, Blade), and aspiring young thespian Barry (Ricky Mabe - Trailer Park of Terror).

Together they plan to make an x-rated take-off on Star Wars episode IV: A New Hope, and while we get to see the awesome sets and costumes they create for this skin satire, they get a few wrenches thrown in and have to deal with those, but the real question is, can lifelong friends Zack and Miri film a sex scene together without forming an emotional connection?

Salad Toss:
-Popcorn Porn: The Making of Zack and Miri

-Deleted Scenes

-Money Shots Webisodes

-Comic-Con 2008

-Outtakes, Ad-libs and Bloopers

-Seth vs Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy

Money Shot:
This movie is every bit as warm and fuzzy as it is sexy and funny and totally x-rated and not appropriate for anyone but adults who have and appreciate a delightfully dirty sense of humor. You want to own this in Blu-ray not only to see and hear Katie Morgan and Jason Mewes do the nasty on the counter in 1080p and Dolby Digital True-HD 5.1 audio, but you also want the world's clearest and highest definition audio and video when you're up close and personal with the fully clothed heartfelt moments between Zack and Miri.

ComicsOnline gives Zack and Miri Make a Porno 4.5 out of 5 prurient pathways to true love.

 Blu-ray Review: Boondock Saints

Movies "For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti." -McManus prayer

I didn't first see Boondock Saints until 2005, due in no small part to its extremely constrained US theatrical realease when it first premiered in 1999. It seems that some people were hypersensitive about public gunplay after Columbine, which was a shame, as this was a truly exciting film that later became a cult classic on video and DVD. Now that Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is in post-production, devine provenance has delivered the original cult classic in the format it was always been fortold in the scriptures: 1080p High Definition graphics and lossless Dolby Digital 5.1 True-HD sound.

Story:
In South Boston, Irish Catholic fraternal twin brothers Connor McManus (Sean Patrick Flanery, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles) and Murphy McManus (Norman Reedus, Blade II) are in their local pub with all the other regulars for St. Patrick's Day when their tourette's-having beloved bartender intimates that he's losing the bar, being forced out by the Russian mob in a few short days. The mob enforcers show up in the middle of their St Pat's celebration instead and tell everyone to get out immediately. The brothers immediately show their likability by warmly inviting the mobsters to drink with them instead, as "Everyone is Irish on St Patty's Day!" The Russians start a fight instead, and they are humiliated by the brothers.

This sets in motion events that escalate the rest of the movie, leading a couple of hard working meat packing boys to become vigilantes, ridding their beloved city of the mob, bit by bit until the mob springs from jail and hires the fabled "Il Duce" (Billy Connolly, X-Files: I Want to Believe), the assassin who cannot be stopped. Except... well, I'm getting ahead of myself.

The movie also features a parallel story of the cocky closeted FBI agent (Willem Dafoe, Spider-Man) who is tracking down the people leaving so many dead mobsters in thier wake. In the end will he capture them or join them?

Extras:
-Extended Director's Cut of the Film

-Audio Commentary by Writer/Director Troy Duffy (Theatrical Cut)

-Audio Commentary by Actor Billy Connolly (Theatrical Cut)

-Outtakes

-Deleted Scenes

-The Boondock Saints Script

-Enhanced for D-Box Motion Control Systems

"While the wicked stand confounded, call me with thy saints surrounded."
As described above, this film is very over the top in a lot of ways, but all of them good. While aspects of this movie become predictable after a very short time, you're still watching with a grin, knowing what's going to happen but anticipating it eagerly. One great example of this is the Chekov's gun of "the rope". Anyone who has watched spy movies or equipped a first level D&D character knows about getting some rope just in case. Let's just say that as soon as you see the brothers' method of egress into the gangsters' hotel room you know how it's going to go down, but even knowing, you can't know how amazing everything eventually turns out.

This film is among or at the top of any list of movies in the genre niches: Antihero, Vigilante, Brothers-in-Arms, Crimefighting, Revenge, and probably a good number of others. If you are a fan of any of these and enjoy over the top gratuitous violence, this may very well be the perfect movie for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough, and now that it's out on Blu-ray, now is the perfect time to own it.

ComicsOnline gives Boondock Saints on Blu-ray 5 out of 5 prayers for vengeance.
