Advance Review: Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1 (Spoiler-Free)

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

Our return to the Invincible Universe officially starts here! Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1 from Robert Kirkman (Writer), Ryan Ottley (Artist), Annalisa Leoni (Colorist), and Rus Wooton (Letterer) has arrived, and thanks to our friends at Image and Skybound Entertainment, we got to take an advance look at the secret history of one of our favorite characters.

Official Synopsis:
THE BEST NEW (NOT QUITE A) SUPERHERO SERIES IN THE UNIVERSE! Cursed with an unquenchable thirst for violence, BATTLE BEAST searches the universe for the one warrior mightier than him—and a glorious death, his only reward. But even in a universe of mighty Viltrumites like Invincible and Omni-Man, it seems that no one may be able to stop the galaxy’s deadliest warrior…unless he does the unthinkable. Superstars ROBERT KIRKMAN and RYAN OTTLEY present the most demanded INVINCIBLE story of all time, revealing the secret story of Battle Beast that’s perfect for any long-time fan (no spoilers!) and new readers alike.

How do you top perfection? For 144 issues (plus various specials and mini-series), Invincible redefined the concept of the superhero. Robert Kirkman, Corey Walker, and Ryan Ottley paved the way for Mark Grayson to explore the universe and took readers on an insanely fun thrill ride. Although we have been deprived of new Invincible comics since the series wrapped in 2018, the characters have continued to thrive in their new animated habitat. Now that we officially have Michael Dorn’s Battle Beast performance solidified in our minds, it seems like the perfect time to explore the character’s backstory.

Battle Beast is a welcome addition to the Invincible Universe. This book doesn’t skip a beat, and you couldn’t ask for a more seamless return from Kirkman and Ottley. Leoni’s colors boldly complement the alien landscapes, and Wooton continues to impress with creative lettering that truly elevates the character-driven story (the ship’s computer was one of my favorite elements).

In the world of comics, there is a tendency to return to fan-favorite characters and stories every so often to cash in on fan nostalgia. There are plenty of examples, and in the last few months, there are a number of such announcements that have been made across the industry. Thankfully for readers, Battle Beast does NOT fall into this category, as it is clear that the creators have a specific story and adventure to tell. Their excitement, passion, and enthusiasm for this character (and the broader Invincible Universe) help to differentiate this book, and it is clear that the first issue is just the tip of the iceberg.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
