Over the last few months, readers were teased with a major twist on who Venom’s new host would be. Eddie and Dylan Brock were off the table, and it was time for someone new to step into the symbiote’s shoes. A list of potential hosts was identified and touted by Marvel as being “the list” of potential candidates, but when it came time to the big reveal, it turned out to be none other than Mary Jane “Jackpot” Watson as the real host. With the release of All-New Venom #6, readers will finally get to learn how this odd couple came to be…

Official Synopsis:
THE ORIGIN OF THE ALL-NEW VENOM! Now we know WHO the All-New Venom is…the question is HOW? What happened after the events of the Venom War? Why did the symbiote choose this host – and why can’t they separate? Jackpot confronts Venom – and she may not like what she finds out!

Without going into specifics on how the pair bonded, I have to admit that I really enjoyed this issue. Of all of the Marvel characters to pair Venom with, MJ was not on my bingo card. The original hit list of potential candidates wasn’t exactly thrilling to me, but as a reader, I wanted to see where the story went after the “Venom War” event. Now that their secret origin stands revealed, it’s something that I actually found surprisingly enjoyable. Despite enjoying the latest story, I think that Marvel took too long in getting to this chapter. The bait and switch approach could have been fun for a short-term mystery, but asking readers to wait this long to see if it was worth their time probably lost a lot of potential readers along the way. Not everything needs to be deconstructed across six or more issues, and I think that the tendency to stretch the story out will probably be seen as a negative.
Despite this concern, the logic and connection displayed between the newly bonded Venom has my attention, and I hope it’s not too late for this book. Also, I’m just thrilled that it isn’t Paul behind the “mask” and really hope that Marvel will stop pushing this character as no one likes him.
