Comic Book Review: Spider-Man & Wolverine #1

by Kevin Gaussoin, Editor-in-Chief

Over the past couple of years, famed writer/producer Marc Guggenheim has become a true “friend of the show” here at ComicsOnline, so naturally when we saw that he’s now writing a brand new comic book featuring two of our favorite Marvel super heroes, we had to read it and review it. After reading Spider-Man & Wolverine #1, we were shocked, amazed, uncannied even. In short, we can cut this whole review down to four short words, and we mean them with all the love and reverence Guggenheim is due…

Official Description:
THWIKT!
Did you hear that? That sound can only mean one thing: two of your favorite Marvel heroes doing what they do best! With great power, there must also come… the best there is! SPIDER-MAN & WOLVERINE team up for the biggest adventure in Marvel comics! Who or what is targeting this unlikely duo, and what can they do to stop it? Get ready for a nonstop thrill ride of big villains, bigger threats and even bigger surprises as LOGAN and PETER PARKER team up against the machinations of a plot too big for just one hero… RATED T+

…DAMN YOU, MARC GUGGENHEIM!

Let’s get back to that. First let’s talk art.

You probably know Kaare Andrews’ art from things like Spider-Man: Reign, Immortal Iron Fists, Spider-Man: Legend of the Spider Clan, or the more recent Amazing Fantasy series. Andrews has a wonderful exaggerated style reminiscent of nineties comic legends like Todd McFarlane or Sam Keith. This style lends itself ideally to the both the Peter on a date scene as well as the crazy imagery depicting each of our protagonists experiencing significant milestones of the other’s life. Being a premiere issue of a Spider-Man series and what’s sure to become a key issue in everyone’s collections, Marvel made sure there were plenty of alternate covers. I chose the standard Kaare Andrews cover of Spider-Man & Wolverine #1, as it was definitely my favorite. I also liked the below Clayton Crain cover.

So yeah, that’s it, right? You don’t want to know why I might be upset with Marc Guggenheim, or why Spider-Man & Wolverine #1 is going to become a key issue, do you? Those would be spoilers!

I should say that I adore everything Marc Guggenheim writes, and you should definitely read or listen to his most recent novel In Any Lifetime, especially if you’re a sucker for time travel or multiversal travel like I am.

But this Spider-Man & Wolverine #1? Fine, it’s good. Really good. Marc Guggenheim and Kaare Andrews have brought us a shocker that will go down in history on a par with The Winter Soldier. I’m not gonna spoil it, but hold on to your guts, ‘cause they’re about to get twisted at twenty thousand feet!
