Comic Book Review: Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton #1

by Kent McKee, Time and Space Comics

Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton #1 is a heart tugging journey through the world as seen not by a superhero, but through the soul of a lost, super powered dog.

Official Description:
A heartfelt and moving view of humanity, good and bad, through the empathic eyes of the ultimate outsider, a poor, lost dog, who just happens to have superpowers.

Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton #1 sets out with warmth and weight. It unfolds from the view of Krypto, who experiences the world in a way few characters ever get to share. It is rare to feel emotion come through panting and the tilt of a head, but this comic captures that. His longing to understand people and to find a place among them makes this more than a superhero story.

Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton #1 opens on Krypton with Jor El and Lara El, but before long their story blends with Krypto’s. Dialogue and lettering are crafted in a unique way so that how Krypto hears things, scrambled and overlapping, colored by emotion, is as clear as what is being said. The art is perfect for what this story needs. It is subtle without being showy, and it lets the story breathe.

Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton #1 also lays out the when, why, and how of Krypto’s journey from Krypton. The ending shocked me because it was not what I was expecting. Krypto meets someone familiar to Superman fans, but it is not the first face I thought I would see when a super dog lands on Earth.

I am eager to follow where Krypto’s eyes take us next on Earth and how his story unfolds.

Rating: ★★★★½
ComicsOnline gives Krypto the Last Dog of Krypton #1 – 4.5 out of 5 empathetic howls. A touching launch that sees Krypton through new eyes.
