Comic Book Review: New History of the DC Universe #1

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

The DC Universe has experienced a lot in recent years, but fear not—the New History of the DC Universe #1 is the perfect way to celebrate 90 years of storytelling.

Between Flashpoint, The New 52, Convergence, Rebirth, Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dawn of DC, ALL IN, and everything in between, it has been hard to track what is “canon.” If you are wondering what story elements are in play, then you are in luck, as DC has decided to release a new four-part series to celebrate their characters and rich history.

Fan-Favorite Writer Mark Waid (Justice League Unlimited, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest), Artists Todd Nauck & Jerry Ordway, Colorists Matt Herms & John Kalisz, and Letter Todd Klein have accepted the challenge of recapping the DC Universe. Having Barry Allen act as the narrator was a clever choice, as his exploration of all corners of the multiverse provides a purpose for the narrative’s existence. As a trusted/credible narrator, it is extremely logical that the former Flash would want to catalog established (or newly re-established) history. This first installment features many aspects from DC’s original Golden Age, but we also get to see how more recent elements like Perpetua, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern, and the New Golden Age now factor in. Every page is packed with knowledge, lore, and excitement as long lost characters return to the forefront in this special series. I particularly appreciated the timeline provided in the back of the book (written by Dave Wielgosz based on research by Mark Waid & Dave Wielgosz), as it clearly displays how the information was curated to craft this release.

The first chapter of this saga features stunning covers by Chris Samnee & Giovanna Niro, Dan Mora, Ryan Sook, Scott Koblish & Hi-Fi, Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, and Michal Cho. With so many gorgeous designs to select from, you might feel inclined to “catch’em all.”

I’ll admit, there was a surprising amount of information that I wasn’t aware of from the Golden Age of DC. The care and attention that the creative team gave to every single panel is utterly impressive. If you are looking to learn more about the DC Universe, consider this the perfect crash course.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
