Comic Book Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Vol. 1: Return to New York (Library Edition)

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

For 40 years, fans have enjoyed the adventures of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael as they fight to save the world from the Shredder, Krang, and other mutated threats. Various creative teams have put their own spin on these heroes over the decades, but the consistent result is that TURTLE POWER continues to thrive. The next evolution of their comic book adventures begins now with the impressive debut of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Vol. 1: Return to New York (Library Edition) from our friends at IDW Publishing.

If you are looking to take your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles experience to the next level, then look no further than the Library Edition of Volume 1. This gorgeous hardcover book is packed with content for TMNT fans of all ages, including issues 1-6, the “Long Way Home” story from the Alpha release, Jason Aaron’s Original Story Outline, and pages of additional layouts and images from the opening arc. I’m a sucker for releases that dive into the creative process, and this special release touches on every aspect on the Turtles’ new status quo.

With over 40 years of TMNT storytelling, one would think that it might be hard to find a fresh new angle to take with beloved heroes. Thankfully, that isn’t the case with this new launch. Aaron and the extensive creative team clearly have a distinct vision for this book, and now you get to experience a RADICAL new direction for the heroes in a half shell. The art feels grounded, and the fish-out-of-water narrative for each of the brothers was an interesting way to begin this new journey. Leonardo’s epic adventure remains my favorite from this collection, as it features time-lapse visuals that are stunningly executed. Raphael’s story was gritty and closer to the original roots of the early comics. Mikey’s story demonstrates the dark side of fame and fortune. Donatello’s tragic situation is absolutely heartbreaking. These pieces are just the tip of the iceberg, but I love seeing how the brothers are forced to rebuild their lives together with a mysterious time jump in play.

It’s important to note that if you are more of a casual fan but still want to explore the latest adventures of the brothers, you can also check out the softcover TPB release of Vol. 1: Return to New York. It doesn’t include the extras or the beautiful hardcover (IDW’s team consistently releases impressive collections), but the story easily stands on its own.

There are so many impressive elements to this story arc, and I love that it has something for everyone. After reading this book, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of TMNT.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
