DVD Review: Spin City Season One

It was 1996, and Michael J. Fox had left television for movies. His career was waning, and it seemed like he was going to be relegated to lesser, direct-to-video releases. In comes Gary Goldberg and DreamWorks with a new television series. This series was Spin City, and it aired on ABC Tuesday nights. Spin City: The Complete First Season was recently released on DVD and collects the entire first season, including the pilot onto DVD.

Spin City was about the deputy mayor of New York City, and his day to day life where he practically ran the city under a pretty much incompetent mayor, and wacky staff.

Episode Highlights:

“Prototype”: Pilot – City Hall has to deal with a garbage strike going on, and an insensitive comment that the mayor makes toward gay people.

DVD Review: Son of the Beach: Volume Two

Baywatch was popular, but not funny. Son of the Beach was funny, but not popular. Ok, it wasn’t really funny, but it was produced by Howard Stern when he had his massive legion of fans. Son of the beach aired from 2000 to 2002 on FX, and garnered an audience large enough to keep it on the air on a cable network. Son of the Beach: Volume Two is out now on DVD.

Son of the Beach is a Baywatch parody that deals with the day to day life of Notch Johnson, the head lifeguard of the beaches of Malibu Adjacent, and his staff.

Episode Highlights:

”Grand Prix”: Head Lifeguard Notch Johnson must uphold the honor of all of America by defeating

”Witness for the Prostitution”: Notch Johnson is being honored by having a building named after him at the local University, but he senses that something is of at the university’s sorority house.

DVD Review: The Fist Foot Way

The Foot Fist Way is a 2008 low-budget comedy film directed by Jody Hill and starring Danny R. McBride. Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s production company, Gary Sanchez Productions, picked up distribution rights to the film and hoped for it to achieve a Napoleon Dynamite-like success. It premiered in 2006 at The Los Angeles Film Festival and was screened at Sundance that same year.
