DVD Review: Sgt. Frog Season 1 Part 1

One school day, Fuyuki Hinata was sleeping in, but his sister, Natsumi, wouldn’t stand for it. Natsumi tricks Fuyuki out of bed by exploiting his love for all thing supernatural and paranormal by pointing at the wall and saying that there was a alien there. Little did Natsumi know, there is an alien there, hiding under the wallpaper. It was our little froggy not-friend Sergeant Keroro. Sergeant Keroro, along with five other members of the poorly named the Advance Recon Mission Preparatory Invasion Terror Platoon, or  A.R.M.P.I.T Platoon, are scouting out Earth, or Pekopon, as they call it, so the rest of the troops from Keron can invade and enslave Pekopon. Shortly after Sergeant Keroro is discovered by Fuyuki and Natsumi, Keroro’s ultimate weapon is taken by Fuyuki, who inadvertently sends a S.O.S. Later, Sergeant Keroro receives a message that the troops have gone home and deemed it unsafe to rescue the A.R.M. P.I.T platoon, but if he survives they want him to bring back some of that Pekopon candy with the soft center. Can Sergeant Keroro survive on Pekopon and enslave the Pekoponeins with only the help of the A.R.M.P.I.T. Platoon?

Highlights
A.R.M.P.I.T. Platoon isn’t very good at their job, but they do have some of the best soldiers in their fields. Sergeant Keroro is the leader of the platoon, he lives at Fuyuki and Natsumi Hinata’s house and does house work. Keroro has no leadership skills and few skills as a soldiers so instead of destroying Pekopon he spends his time reading comic books and building Gundam models. The only real work he does is the house work so he can get money for his models. Private Second Class Tamama also has few skills, although he has bad gas. Tamama is the youngest member of the platoon: he has no war experience but when under pressure or pushed to his limits he will fire bursts of energy from his mouth and eyes. Tamama also has a severe split personality and can get very jealous when someone get close to Keroro. Corporal Giroro is the weapons expert. He is very hot tempered and quick to act. He was child hood friends with Keroro and Lance Corporal Zeroro. Giroro dislikes Keroro because of his lazy nature and basic stupidity. Lance Corporal Zeroro is the stealth expert and is even deadlier than Giroro. After coming to Pekopon Zeroro changed his name to Dororo and started to hunt other aliens. Sergeant Major Kururu is the technology expert in the group. Kururu may be higher rank than Keroro but no one likes him because of his almost evil nature, the best thing to call Kururu is an evil scientist.

Each member of the  A.R.M.P.I.T. Platoon finds a host family on Pekopon that is like the member. The Hinata’s house is home to three of the Platoon members. Like I said earlier, Keroro is one of the ones living there, and his nerdy ways are very similar to Fuyuki’s. Giroro lives in the yard of the Hinata’s house and his brutish ways are so similar to Natsumi’s he falls in love with her. Kururu is the last one at the Hinata’s house, although he isn’t like anyone there, his first host was Mutsumi Saburo and Kururu considers Mutsumi his only intellectual equal. Zeroro lives with a Pekoponein Ninja named Koyuki Azumaya, but sadly they come into the series in the last episode of this volume, so as of now little is known about them. Tamama lives with the multibillionaire Momoka Nishizawa. She, like Tamama, has a severe split personality and when she gets mad is almost as deadly as Tamama is when he is shooting his lasers.

Overall
If you couldn’t tell, Sgt. Frog is a extreme comedy, from the stereotypical chatters to the unlikely situations. One of the things that makes Sgt. Frog entertaining, is all the references to other shows and pop culture icons like Transformers, Space Battleship Yamato, Dip N’ Dots, Dragon Ball Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Super Smash Brothers. The thing that is referenced the most is Gundam, I think only a few episodes go by that Gundam isn’t referenced. My favorite reference is when they reference themselves, Keroro is reading a manga called Captain Frog and Keroro calls him very reliable. Sgt. Frog is one of the funniest animes I have ever seen, it is just as funny Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, but unlike Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo the story line is much more grounded, serious and is played on to make it funnier. Sgt. Frog is an amazing anime and will be loved for years to come.
