Maid Sama! is the new series by author Hiro Fujiwara and tells the story of Misaki Ayuzawa, the first female Student Council President of the formally all boys school, Seika High, that has recently become co-ed. When not being tough as nails to the boys, she works in a maid cafe to help her mother and younger sister. Her secret is discovered by a classmate of hers named Takumi Usui – he takes a liking to her and keeps her job a secret.
Highlights
With Soutarou Kanou still upset with Misaki Ayuzawa as the president, he takes it upon himself to stop her. This leads to some interesting scenes between Takumi and Hiro. As the story progresses, the connection between the two characters grows in an interesting way. We are given a somewhat decent explanation for why Kanou is how he is and are given a nice end to his story.

The second story in this volume involves the obligatory beach episode. This was a very well written story, and the interactions between Misaki and Takumi show that they really care. Takumi, in his own way, shows that he wants to protect Misaki and she starts to accept her feelings for him. This part is mainly about Misaki's co-worker at the maid cafe, Aoi, wanting to win a volley ball competition and Misaki helping out while Takumi joins an opposing team. This volume ends with a funny and interesting retelling of the story of Momotaro.
Overall
This is the first volume of Maid Sama! I've read and I love it. The story is interesting, the art is well drawn, and the interactions between Misaki and Takumi are great. This volume mainly follows Misaki and Takumi around, so it was easy to understand who these characters are. I feel as if there is real chemistry between the two and it isn't one of those types of romance stories where the author has the two characters yelling about how they hate each other.
With well drawn and pleasing art work, any shojo fan would enjoy this series.
