Comic Book Review: Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1

by Christal Kennedy, Reporter

Official Description
KAMALA KHAN IS BACK…AND SHE’S AN X-MAN! That’s right – the good news is that fresh off her
world-saving death, Kamala has been brought back via Krakoan Resurrection Technology! What a way
to learn she’s a mutant! The bad news is her debut at the Hellfire Gala didn’t go exactly as planned, and
now all of mutantkind are being hunted worldwide! Into this world of hate and fear, Kamala has a
secret mission to pull off for the X-Men, all the while struggling to acclimate to this new part of her
identity! PLUS: This huge new chapter of Kamala’s story is being co-written by the MCU’s own Kamala,
Iman Vellani, and Sabir Pirzada of both DARK WEB: MS. MARVEL and her Disney+ series!

Creative Team
Writers – Iman Vellani & Sabir Pirzada
Artists – Carlos Gòmez & Adam Gorham
Colorists – Erick Arciniega
Lettering – VC’s Joe Caramagna
Cover Art – Sara Pichelli & Matthew Wilson

The college experience is one that helps us figure out who we are and shape what our future can hold. Kamala Khan might still be in high school, but this summer program at Empire State University will give her a taste of college life and might give her insight on all the insanity that has happened to her lately. Dying, getting resurrected, finding out you’re a mutant then watching as mutantkind are hunted down by the same people funding your summer college program and then being asked to spy on them while hiding in plain sight…just your typical teen drama right? No wonder she is being haunted by nightmares.

Fallen Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel and X-Men Hellfire Gala 2023 have set up this dramatic, action filled story arc brought to us by MCU’s very own Ms. Marvel: Iman Vellani. The Fall of X story arc is shaping up to be one of the most powerful X-Men storylines and Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1 is just the next piece of what I am expecting to be a very climatic puzzle.

Vellani’s first comic writing experience is taking us down an intense path into what is next for Ms. Marvel. I love the humanity that shows through in the writing, making us connect and relate to the emotions Kamala is dealing with. The moment between Kamala and Bruno where she tells him the truth about what happened to her and revealing she is also a mutant is a beautiful example of this. The artwork in this scene brings the awkwardness, nervousness, and love and the friendship between these two just shines. It was one of my favorite scenes because of how relatable it is. I can’t wait to see what is up next for the newest mutant and how the threads woven in Ms. Marvel connect to Fall of X.
