Comic Book Review: The Singularity (OGN)

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

Over the last few years, we’ve come to expect the unexpected from the creative team at Black Market Narrative (Radiant Black, Inferno Girl Red, Rogue Sun, & The Dead Lucky). This collective of talented creators has been consistently pushing the boundaries of traditional storytelling in the world of comics, finding new and engaging ways elevate the comic experience for readers. This week, readers will be treated to a cosmic experience with the release of The Singularity from Image Comics.

What would you do if you were faced with immortality? If everyone you’ve ever known and loved is constantly ripped away from you, would you still be able to carry on? The being known as Blue Eyes keeps being reborn in life after life, finding that they are constantly faced with loss on an unfathomable level. A mysterious golden being appears to be at the center of the death and destruction, and after countless lives, they must find a way to try and stop the endless cycle. What role do each of these beings play in the cosmic fabric of reality? Get ready to think a lot about your place in the universe as we are taken on a journey of cosmic proportions.

Not only do readers get to experience this exciting new story, but the book is being released in conjunction with an original rock concept album by the same name. Composer Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica) has teamed up with writer Mat Groom (Inferno Girl Red) and creative director Kyle Higgins (Radiant Black) to craft this incredible endeavor. The trio has also assembled a small army to bring this project to life, including Ramón K. Pérez, Danilo Beyruth, Matias Bergara, Federico Berton, Eleonora Carlini, Lorenzo Colangel, Valeria Favoccia, Eduardo Ferigato, Marco Locati, Helena Masellis, John J. Pearson, Simone Ragazzoni, Rod Reis, Riccardo Robaldo, Stefano Simeone, Toby Cypress, Morgan Sorne, Natalia Marques, Rod Fernandes, and Becca Carey. One might think that having so many talented creators with distinctly different personal styles might make the story feel disjointed, but the artistic choices manage to flow seamlessly from page to page, making this story feel that much more impressive.

The Singularity Album features Composer Bear McCreary, along with musicians, Slash, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Rufus Wainwright, Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Jens Kidman (Meshuggah), Joe Satriani, Buck Dharma (Blue Öyster Cult), Asdru Sierra (Ozomatli), Brendan McCreary, Griogair, Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Brendon Small (Metalocalypse), Billy Boyd (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Eivør, Morgan Sorne, Guthrie Govan (The Aristocrats), Bryan Beller (The Aristocrats), Mike Keneally (Zappa), Ben Weinman (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Steve Bartek (Oingo Boingo), John Avila (Oingo Boingo), Warren Fitzgerald (The Vandals), Esjay Jones (We Are PIGS), Sigurjón Kjartansson (HAM), Raya Yarbrough (Outlander), Mega Ran, and Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad, Dethklok).

The Singularity is a truly unique look at the universe through lens of the comic book medium. This story will take you across the multiverse and back, with beautiful designs and stellar colors weaving a stunning tapestry of creation. You aren’t going to find anything else like this in the world of comics, and it most certainly has Eisner Award potential. I shouldn’t be shocked based on the calibre of creators involved, but this team has once again raised the bar for the world of comics.

The Singularity OGN and Album are now available.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
