1993 was a game-changing year for children’s television. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers took the world by storm, demonstrating the potential of repurposing Japanese footage for American audiences. The teenagers with attitude made a lasting impact in the world of pop culture, but they weren’t the only heroes that caught on with the fans… VR Troopers (the first of many attempts to capture the magic of Power Rangers) showcased the adventures of Ryan Steele, JB Reese, and Kaitlin Star as they held off an invasion from an alternate dimension (a “virtual world” if you will). They fought to save our reality for over 90 episodes, but unfortunately, they disappeared without a proper end to their story…until now.
Thanks to the creative team on Power Rangers Prime, the VR Troopers recently made a shocking return after decades of inactivity. These fan-favorite characters play in heavily to the alternate universe story in which Earth was colonized by the Eltarian Empire (Zordon’s race from Power Rangers). Despite playing the antagonists in that series, we are treated to a new ongoing book that expands the VR Troopers’ story and seamlessly modernizes it for a new audience. The creative minds at Boom! Studios have taken everything they learned from their incredible work on their various Power Rangers titles and have applied it to the world of VR Troopers. I loved seeing how elements from the original show have been integrated into this new iteration, and the creative choice to leverage this property in conjunction with the newly established Prime universe makes it even more intriguing.
Nostalgia can be a powerful thing, but this new incarnation of VR Troopers easily stands on its own as a solid relaunch of a fan-favorite brand.
