Comic Book Review: Undiscovered Country #32

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

The end of Undiscovered County is near, and this creative team is pulling out all the stops for the grand finale! Major mysteries are finally revealed, as we learn more and more about Aurora and the true history of Uncle Sam. Get ready for flashbacks…ON THE MOON(?) with the release of Undiscovered Country #32 from Image Comics.

Written by Scott Snyder & Charles Soule, with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli & Leonardo Marcello Grassi, coloring by Matt Wilson, and lettering by Crank!, Undiscovered Country is sadly now just a handful of issues away from a series wrap. These last two issues were worth the wait, as each of the new chapters has been packed full of incredible moments. The tragic truth behind “Uncle Sam” is finally explored, and it’s a doozy. This issue also happens to feature one of my favorite pages from the entirety of the series, as Sam shares an intense (and all too timely) monologue about what happens when we take too long to act and the evil that can fester and take hold in the absence of action. This narration against the stark black backdrop is striking, and is sure to be a fan-favorite moment as the series heads towards its end. Meanwhile on Earth, the rest of the world is fighting a giant robot in Washington D.C.. I love how this book can lean into the comic-style storytelling at one moment, and seamlessly transition to a deep dive into history pages later.

Undiscovered Country continues to demonstrate powerful storytelling, epic visuals, and compelling characters as it heads towards its grand finale.

Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
