Advance Review: Batman #1 (Spoiler-Free)

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

HOLY RELAUNCH BATMAN!

It’s a big week for the Bat-Family as DC is set to relaunch Batman with a spectacular new direction! With a new creative team and a new status quo, the titular Bat-book is poised to shake things up for Batman #1, the next chapter of DC’s ALL IN initiative.

I’ve been waiting to talk about this book for months, and I’m incredibly excited for this new iteration of Batman to be unleashed. Writer Matt Fraction (Hawkeye), artist Jorge Jiménez (Batman), colorist Tomeu Morey (Batman), and letterer Clayton Cowles (Absolute Batman) come together to craft a new arc for the Dark Knight that seamlessly blends contemporary and classic elements. The first installment sets the stage for readers new and old, establishing a new jump on point for anyone who wants more Batman in their lives. Bruce and Gotham have been through a lot in recent years, and now the Caped Crusader must find new ways to evolve and continue his quest to save the innocent people of the city he’s sworn to protect. Armed with a stunning new suit (grey and blue!!) and new gadgets, readers are sure to enjoy these new Batman adventures.

As much as I’ve enjoyed the recent Batman arcs from Dawn of DC and All In, this creative team probably has me the most excited. Fraction’s work on Hawkeye was a standout in recent years, and teaming him up with Jiménez (who killed it with my personal favorite stories in Batman #900) couldn’t have been a better choice. Adding Morey and Cowles to the mix makes this a powerful creative team-up, and this book has the potential to make big waves for DC. Also, we have to talk about how epic this art is. The title page spread got my attention, but with each turn of the page, the new suit looks beyond perfect against the backdrop of Gotham. The choice of Robin for this new story is another massive highlight, but we will talk more about him with the release of Batman #2 next month.

The new launch for Batman is more than a must-read, it’s a thrilling comic experience. Don’t miss a phenomenal start to a new era for the Dark Knight.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
