Comic Book Review: Star Trek: Lore War TPB

Star Trek: Lore War TPB
Rating: ★★★★★ (Lore demands no less than perfection after all…)

Official Synopsis: Following the action of Star Trek: Day of Blood, an all-new crossover event between Star Trek and Defiant is here! Lore War shows us a universe rebuilt in Lore’s image. The crews of the Theseus and the Defiant are scattered across the universe with no memory of who they once were—some even worship Lore as their God. Lore has won; his rule is absolute. But the Sisko remains, and there are forces who wish to remind him of his power. From the Eisner-nominated writers of Star Trek, Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly; the critically acclaimed writer of Star Trek: Defiant, Christopher Cantwell; the Eisner-nominated writer of Shaxs’ Best Day, Ryan North; and artists Davide Tinto and Derek Charm comes the next big Star Trek event! Includes Star Trek: Lore War #1, Star Trek issues #31–32, Star Trek: Defiant issues #26–27, Star Trek: Lore War—Shaxs’ Worst Day, and Star Trek: Omega.

Review: Just when you thought that the creative minds behind the IDW Star Trek comics couldn’t possibly get any bolder after their infamous Day of Blood event, they decided to BLOW UP the Star Trek Universe. That’s right, the story that we know has changed and the characters that we love have been reinvented by Lore. Lore War has arrived in a new and GLORIOUS collected iteration, and things might never be the same again.

It all has been building to this. We already knew that Lore was a crazy, narcissistic, unhinged android, but we never expected that he would find a way to wield the power of the Gods and overwrite the universe in his image…but he did. Since we first met Lore, he’s shown us that he’s obsessed with controlling his brother Data and the rest of his environment to show Data and at this point, the entire Star Trek multiverse, that he is the superior android and big daddy Soong was wrong to forsake endless temper tantrum Lore in favor of logical heroic Data. Now that he’s got his dearest wish, what’s next? Clearly it’s up to The Sisko to stop him. But just in case he decides to read this review, all hail Lore!

As the Lore War plays out with shocking twists, it features another creative detour a la what this team did during their Day of Blood event. The Lore War is in full swing, and the universe has been rewritten. What happens when you wake up one day and realize that you’ve been turned into the worst possible version of yourself? Shaxs is about to find out as the creative team behind Star Trek: Day of Blood – Shaxs’ Best Day take the game to a whole new level in… Star Trek: Lore War – Shaxs’ Worst Day!

After the dust settles, the Star Trek comics take us full circle to wrap up their saga with a grand finale in Star Trek: Omega. This book showcases all of the characters from both of the ongoing titles and provides readers with something we needed most: a sense of closure. Based on the story’s timeframe, we knew the characters would eventually head towards their destinies within the greater Star Trek universe. The question of what happened in between those major television and film milestones finally gets some answers, and thankfully, the resolution is utterly satisfying. The glimpses into the character’s lives post Lore War is executed with care and grace, as the artistic talent behind the Trek books gets highlighted in this spectacular final issue.

Overall, this outstanding chapter is the icing on the cake as the current iteration of IDW’s Star Trek saga comes to an end. Make sure you also check out more Star Trek titles from IDW Publishing, including Star Trek: Red Shirts, Star Trek: The Last Starship, and more!

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
