Paley Center’s last LOST Day!

The Paley Center for Media studies the connection between media and society, looking back through history at things like the moon landing, the first color TV, and then something like the end of ABC's hit show LOST. It's been a long six years for fans of this incredible show, and it's all over tonight. The Paley Center decided to take one more last look at it by putting on a presentation for a lucky gathering in New York City (and Los Angeles), and I was allowed to go check it out.

The energy in the audience was crackling, with various fans wearing shirts with the numbers or jackets with the Dharma symbol, and everyone was chattering excitedly to one another. About the finale, about their favorite parts of the show, about the first time the hatch was opened or when they knew that LOST would be special. The presentation got started with audience participation in the trivia round. Oooo. I really thought I was a pretty hardcore fan of the show, but other people in the audience schooled me on that. I almost got to the final round but I didn't even make it down to the stage. Boooo! After a series of yes/no questions to weed out the audience, they ended up with six (Oceanic Six!) participants.

Next up they were shown clips and then given specific questions about what the clips were about to reveal. The questions included how long Rousseau's message was going around, what Locke watched burn in the first season with all the bodies (his wheelchair!), but when it was down to two, only one question remained. When Locke was shot by Ben and Walt appeared to him, what did Walt (aka Smokey) tell him to get him up? Answer: You tell me!

Once the trivia was over, they started the new enhanced pilot. ABC gave them permission to do this, even though the episode hadn't officially aired on the television yet. They showed clips from the 2005 Paley Center interviews with the cast, which was endearing and hilarious, and then the pilot began. Watching it with two hundred other people was incredible. Everyone cheered and laughed and responded with energy to little things like Vincent showing up, or a funny line from Charlie, or the first time Hurley said 'dude.'

After the pilot a panel came in of experts who have been recapping or writing on LOST for years. They had questions to answer of their own, but the audience was allowed to ask some discussion questions as well. I asked one about whether they thought the smoke monster was truly evil or not, and most of them agreed there were shades of gray, like in the rest of the show, and he was the antagonist if not pure evil. No one was sure about the finale or what was in store, and everyone liked it that way. But what everyone knew for sure was that LOST changed television in the best sense, and the six year journey was worth it even if we've had our disappointments.

Tonight is the finale on ABC. There is a one hour recap followed by a two and a half hour finale, and then don't forget to watch Jimmy Kimmel as he interviews the cast and says farewell to this game-changing show. Farewell, LOST. I will never love another show like you.
