Karl’s Shocktober Movie List

It’s that time of year again. The time when all the ghosties, and goblins, and things that go bump in the night come out. The month of October, which leads to Halloween? And with it are the scares that go with this time of year. So here’s my recommended watching for the month. Let me know what you think. I know that there are a lot of movies that deserve to be on the list but didn’t make the cut this year, so let me know what I missed. Share the scare.

1. Zombieland – Great movie and a nice way to ease into the rest of the month. DVD  Blu-ray

2. Night of the Living Dead 3-D – A re-make of the horror classic but very campy. Look for the character portrayals from the original. And Sid Haig. DVD

3.  Shaun of the Dead – Horror humor from across the pond. Get the DVD, they edit too much on Comedy Central. DVD   Blu-ray

4. The Graves – From Horrorfest 4, The Graves is written and directed by Brian Pudilo, so it‘s like a live action comic book. And a great performance by Bill Moseley.  DVD

5. The Final – Another offering from Horrorfest 4, The Final is truly twisted tale of high school revenge. DVD

6. Feast – An alien invasion, bodily fluids, Henry Rollins in pink sweats, and a cameo from Jason Mewes.  DVD   Blu-ray

7.  Slither – This is what Nathan Fillon did between spaceship captain and writer/detective. With outer space slugs.  DVD  Blu-ray

8. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead – The remakes of the George Romero classics, at least the good ones.

9   Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, Survival of the Dead– The continuation of the Living Dead series. The nice thing about these is they can be inserted after the remakes or the originals.

10. Teeth – This is a tale that makes you think twice about sex without love. It also gives a new meaning to “Love Bites”.

11. Hard Candy –Revenge most satisfying. The scary part is it’s done by Juno (Ellen Page).

12. Cloverfield – A good-old-fashioned alien invasion as recorded by the participants. Once the dizziness and headaches abate this is a really good flick.

13.Descent – A group of women spelunking in the Ozarks; what could go wrong?

14. Quarantine – In the spirit of Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, this film chronicles a strange outbreak in an apartment building. A good mix of news camera work and third person perspective intensifies the terror.

15. [REC], [REC] 2 – The Spanish movie that Quarantine is based on, and its sequel. The sequel picks up minutes after [REC] and spins a compelling story of survival with an unforeseen twist that is a truly a WTH moment.

16. Saw, Saw II, Saw III – All six Saw movies are included in this countdown because I realized that each movie is an episode in a larger story. An intricate story that has developed over six movies. A story that will culminate this year.

17. Saw 4
18.  Saw 5
19. Saw 6

20. Hatchet – A killer in the swamps of Louisiana, but the tension and the gore are stupendous.

21. Dismal – Another swamp, more cannibalistic killers. You’d think people would stop vacationing in the wetlands.  DVD

22. Dread – Another Horrorfest 4 movie based on a Clive Barker story. DVD

23. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead – The original zombie holocaust.

24. Paranormal Activity – A ghost story told from the perspective of the first person camera. I know that when I’m in danger I need to capture my demise on film.

25. The Human Centipede – Think about it – a human centipede. Here’s a hint; there’s more than one human involved. Think about it again. Think about it and weep.

26. Jennifer’s Body – Demonic possession, rogue souls and deals with the devil.

27. The Hills Run Red – A movie about a budding young director in search of the scariest, goriest movie known to man. The legendary “The Hills Run Red”. And the search is combined with a hike in the woods.

28. 30 Days of Night – Who could possibly want to vacation in Alaska during the month long darkness. Vampires, of course.

29. Halloween, Halloween 2 – The original Halloween night still stands the tests of time.

30. House of 1000 Corpses, Rob Zombies Halloween, and Rob Zombies Halloween 2– How can you not want to watch Captain Spalding, Otis, Baby, and Michael Meyers all in one night.

31. Trick r Treat – This movie has taken the top Halloween slot from Halloween. This is a good horror anthology that epitomizes Halloween.
