NYCC 2010: Young Justice

The Young Justice presentation was moderated by Rick Sands from TV Guide Magazine. Our guests were Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman. Brandon's past works include Batman Brave and the Bold while Greg's was on Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

They wanted everyone to know we will see the 1 hour pilot air on November 26th. The series will begin airing in January of 2011.

The series takes place on Earth 16 of the multiverse. On this Earth Superman put his cape on for the first time about 10 years ago. The Justice League is about 3-4 years old. As the heroes have come together to become a stronger force of good the villains have become more organized in order to compete. These are not the bumbling villains we've seen in other shows.

Robin is the most experienced having been doing this for about 4 years. He is the youngest member of the team at about 13 years old. Miss Martian is physically the oldest in Earth terms she is 48 but is a teenager by Martian standards. Her understanding of human relationships is almost entirely based on what she knows from television. Superboy is 16 years old in appearance but only 16 weeks old since he is a clone.

KidFlash will be Robin's best friend and as a unique twist he is not quite as fast as his mentor and can't do all the same things. Notably he can not stop on a dime like Barry Allen. He has to accelerate and decelerate to hit top speed and stop respectively. Kid Flash wears a bit of an armor allows him to use his body as a weapon.

Aqualad is the team leader and there's a secret we know that even he does not yet know yet. His father is the Black Manta.

They then showed us about 6-7 minutes of footage that we were told is still early footage. It looked greatly and showed us Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad and Speedy with their individual mentors engaging enemies in their respective areas of operations, interestingly all ice based enemies. This was said to be significant.

The footage was awesome, there was action, humor, and enough stuff for a comic geek like me to go crazy for.

The team said that in the first 18 episodes they had about 150 DC Universe characters showing up. When asked if there was an embargo any characters they said in the beginning there were "4" characters they could not use but that has since lifted and you probably will not see them initially. Now everyone is fair game.

I asked since they have made a point of saying this is a rebooted take on a world if we should expect that the Justice League is the first super team or has there been a Justice Society. I was told that the JSA did exist but they existed in the 40's and there's been a huge gap from then through now

We will see Jay Garrick but he's really really old. Most JSA figures are deceased or surely retired.

Captain Marvel will be hanging around a lot since the secret we know that almost everyone else does not is that he's secretly 10 year old Billy Batson.

The series will have a heavy story line about Secrets and Lies.

Another secret is that Batman has forbidden Robin from revealing his secret identity but he has in fact revealed it to Wally West aka Kid Flash. Batman does not know this…yet. Black Canary is the team's combat trainer. We will soon understand why Zatara is on the Justice League and not Zatanna. We will see something happen in the first episodes that will explain why Speedy is not on the team. Artemis is an established character that we all know but she is not an Amazon, not from Apocalypse, not Donna Troy, Not Arrowette.

The series looks great and the concepts shown and discussed look really exciting.
