TV Review: The Walking Dead Episode 2: “Guts”

The second episode based on Robert Kirkman’s hit comicbook series The Walking Dead airs tonight on AMC at 10pm ET/9C. Picking up moments after the cliffhanger from the series premiere, Rick Grimes finds himself trapped in a tank and surrounded by the undead. As Rick begins to realize that his fate might be sealed, he soon finds help from a sarcastic voice on the CB radio.

While the epic groundbreaking 90 minute Halloween premiere episode of The Walking Dead on AMC very closely followed the first issue or two of the award-winning comic book series, the second episode “Guts”  diverges off the path of the comic source material far more than just having Sheriff’s Deputy and everyone’s favorite protagonist Rick Grimes hide in the tank rather than just ride the horse past it. The funny thing is, we promised AMC that we wouldn’t reveal certain things like plot threads that diverge from the comics, and this episode really doesn’t have much that is in the comics besides the fact that it’s Glenn that saves Rick from the Atlanta zombies and Lori and Rick’s old partner Shane are sneaking off into the woods to “work off some tension” not knowing that Rick is in fact still alive and on his way back to rejoin them.

“Guts” is a departure from the source material, but serves to show us that The Walking Dead may be rather decompressed in comparison to the comics, allowing for even more character development of each of our survivors, and perhaps allowing to tell an even richer picture of how it is to survive and give us more perspectives on what it means to be human.

“Guts” airs tonight on AMC at 10/9 Central. Aim for the head.

The South did rise again. Happy now?

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
