SDCC 2013: Green Lantern

Green Lantern

by Blake Hill, Guest Reporter

Here are some quick highlights from Saturday’s Green Lantern panel at SDCC 2013:

  • There are plans in play to bring out a new warrior queen Star Sapphire who will have a lasting story arc, the return of Black Hand for “Villains Month”, as well as following Guy Gardener as he goes undercover in Red Lanterns and manages to shock even them.
  • GL core  title will be exploring new recruits. While the rings may search out the best creature in their sectors, it’s becoming apparent that after so many losses, the rings are starting to resort to the more…unusual selections.
  • Beyond that, the team’s main focus is on a new arc called “Lights Out”, focussing on a new sympathetic villain called Relic. Relic is an oversized alien (literally, he’s huge) than is spawned into our universe from the last pocket of the universe that existed before us.
  • Relic is a scientist, and upon discovering himself in this new universe, sets about running tests to better understand our reality, including the lights of the emotional spectrum. He has a convenient test subject to use for these experiments- Kyle Rayner. Relic will test Kyle in ways that literally ‘no other being in the universe’ could handle, but more than that, Relic will tie into “Villains Month”. Reaching into all the Lantern titles, bringing every wielder of light together,  and permanently affecting the way the Lanterns of every spectrum work.
  • This current story arc is a true introduction to the new GL team, who are taking some risks to shake things up and give us something new and interesting to read.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
