Advance Review: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – Season 2 – “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”

Things are about to get timey-wimey on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, as La’An finds herself in the center of a time travel episode! Season Two continues with “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”, written by David Reed and directed by Amanda Row. SPOILERS AHEAD!

When a temporal agent suddenly appears on the Enterprise to provide a cryptic warning while bleeding to death, you know that things are about to get interesting. La’An finds her world turned upside down as her past is altered in a matter of moments. Captain Pike is no longer in command of the Enterprise, there is no Federation, everyone is at war with the Romulans, and Captain James T. Kirk of the United Earth Alliance is in the big chair. After confronting the Captain about the surprise changes to the timeline, the duo find themselves instantaneously transported to twenty-first-century Earth thanks to some future tech La’An received from her dying agent friend. Not only must they find a way to blend in with their new surroundings, but they must also determine what caused the major deviation in the timeline. Can they stop Earth from becoming a wasteland and restore the timeline, and would their success mean for this variation of Captain Kirk?

Make no mistake, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” is the La’An Noonien-Singh and Alternate Alternate James T. Kirk show. I love the fact that the creative team continues to subvert expectations and have created yet another variation of Kirk (we first saw an alternate version in the Season One finale). Christina Chong and Paul Wesley have insanely strong chemistry, leading to entertaining character dynamics and surprising twists as their situation gets more dire. Chong took full advantage of the La’An-centric story, demonstrating impressive range in a story that added another interesting layer to the Noonien-Singh family tree. Wesley’s interpretation of Kirk continues to shine brightly on Strange New Worlds, as this charismatic, intelligent, yet brash variation of Kirk worked with our favorite Lieutenant to save the timeline. I didn’t think I would ever ship these two characters, but this episode gives us many compelling reasons to love this idea! I really hope that the creative team finds an opportunity to pair this unlikely team together again for more adventures in future episodes.

Some of my favorite Trek stories are the ones that place the characters in unfamiliar territory, and as far as I know, this is the first time we’ve had an episode set in the far off land of…Canada! The adventures of La’An and Jim take an interesting turn as they traverse this new terrain, eventually working their way to Vermont to find an old old friend for some assistance. The setting provided the creative team with some beautiful backdrops and visuals to further embellish on the fact that our heroes were “not in Kansas anymore”. Maybe someday we will see 24th century Canada…but not today.

Official Synopsis: Episode 203: “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”
La’An travels back in time to twenty-first-century Earth to prevent an attack which will alter humanity’s future history—and bring her face to face with her own contentious legacy.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
