Comic Book Review: Spider-Man vs Predator #1

by Kent McKee, Time and Space Comics

Spider-Man vs Predator #1 is a gritty collision between wall crawling hero and alien hunter that delivers chills and chaos.

Official Description:
TARGET: SPIDER-MAN IN PREDATOR’S GRITTIEST SERIES YET! In Predator vs Wolverine, we saw a single Predator stalk Earth’s greatest prey, the killing machine Wolverine. In Predator vs Black Panther, Yautja invaded Wakanda and nearly dethroned its king. Now Ben Percy turns his twisted brain to Marvel’s most beloved property Spider-Man! A heat wave sends NYC into a blackout and Spider-Man on patrol as tempers boil across the city. But beneath its grimy sewers and subways lurks a threat unlike anything Peter Parker has faced before. Introducing “Skinner,” a Predator of no honor and no clan, only a thirst for blood. Exquisitely rendered by superstar artist Marcelo Ferreira!

Spider-Man vs Predator #1 surprised me in the best way. I have not picked up a Spider-Man book in years because I lean toward DC, but I am glad I made an exception here. Ben Percy’s script throws you into the thick of NYC’s heat wave and keeps the tension high from the very first page. The dialogue and pacing had me hooked instantly.

It is exciting to see Peter Parker flex his investigative side again. Watching him navigate a blackout stricken city while something deadly stalks from the sewers raises the suspense with every turn of the page. Skinner is everything a Predator should be. He is relentless, brutal, and frightening in ways both familiar and unexpected. One Spider-Man vs Predator panel in particular shocked me when Skinner ripped off a human face and wore it like a mask.

Marcelo Ferreira’s art brings the grime of New York to life while capturing Spider-Man’s agility mid-swing in glorious detail. The city feels alive and threatening at every corner. Spider-Man vs Predator #1 spoiled me, a huge Predator fan, because it was everything I wanted in a Predator crossover. I am already counting the days until the second issue arrives.

Rating: ★★★★½
ComicsOnline gives Spider-Man vs Predator #1 – 4.5 out of 5 bone rattling showdowns. A brutal debut that reawakens the thrill of the hunt.
