Comic Book Review: Justice League Unlimited #8 (“We Are Yesterday”, Part 8)

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

We’ve made it to the grand finale! Grodd and his forces have overtaken the Watchtower, and it will take a very special incarnation of the Justice League Unlimited to save the day. Justice League Unlimited #8 (“We Are Yesterday”, Part 8) is about to have some major ramifications on the larger DC Universe as the crossover with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest comes to an impressive end.

Creative Team:
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Dan Mora
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain
Letterer: Ariana Maher

There’s something different about DC’s All In initiative. The talented individuals at DC realized the impact from Dawn of DC and turned the dial up to 11, allowing the creative teams to truly celebrate everything that has made their characters great for decades. “We Are Yesterday” ends with a bang, providing readers with a thrilling conclusion that features time-displaced versions of the favorite heroes from throughout DC’s rich history. By fully embracing everything that came before, the crossover provides readers a fun narrative that successfully twists classic superhero tropes.

Beyond the writing, we need to talk about the art. Dan Mora is on a killer roll, as he continues his quest to draw every character from the DC Universe. His character designs, panel compositions, and overall approach to comics are just amazing. Getting to see his take on Batman Beyond, the Legion of Doom, and all of the time-displaced heroes is a joy to experience, and Tamra Bonvillain’s colors just add the extra punch that puts the story over the top. We can’t leave the lettering work of Ariana Maher out of the discussion, as the subtle emphasis with each character really pops with each page. As cool as this arc has been, I’m even more excited about the potential of what comes next…

“We Are Yesterday” sets a new golden standard for DC’s crossover events. This event was fun on so many levels. Both Justice League Unlimited and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest continue to be wonderful ongoing reads, and I would highly recommend that you check out the collected editions if you want to see more from these creative teams.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
