Comic Book Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III #1

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief,

They say the best things come in threes, and that is absolutely the case with the launch of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III! Fan-favorite writer Ryan Parrott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Rogue Sun) returns, and this time he’s paired with artist Vincenzo Federici (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation), colorist Raúl Angulo (The Expanse: Dragon Tooth), and Letterer Ed Dukeshire (Power Rangers Prime) to craft the next chapter for our favorite teenage heroes. With Rita and Krang out of the picture, our heroes are now faced with a new class of villainy as The Shredder and Lord Zedd are about to make some major moves…

Crossovers are such an interesting component of the world of comics. I love reading these stories, especially when the creative team has such a deep passion and understanding for the characters and their respective worlds. In the case of MMPR/TMNT, the previous two releases rank in my top crossover events of all time, with Ryan and creative teams providing readers with a thrilling narrative that was organic and engaging for fans of all ages. Now that we’ve made it to the third installment, it seems like all bets are off as the bad guys gain the upper hand. During the BOOM! Studios panel at SDCC, Parrott said that this new arc was going to focus heavily on the villains, and this first issue quickly establishes a new status quo. The Shadow Morphers played such an interesting role in the last arc, and it looks like that might have been the tip of the iceberg as the technology and universes collide.

Now, let’s talk about the radical art in this book. In a nutshell, Federici knocks it out of the park with this first issue. The previous books laid a solid foundation for this installment, but I love how the energy comes through with style. It easily complements what came before while taking the action to the next level. Angulo’s colors work wonders for this book, balancing the bright colors of the morphinomenal heroes with the dark and gritty moments. Dukeshire’s lettering continues to be a highlight for me, as his style and approach to these stories adds an extra layer of comfort and excitement. I also want to give a shout out to Dan Mora for the kick-ass cover.

Lastly, I want to say that as crazy as the opening was, the cliffhanger was pure evil. You’ll understand when you get there, but damn…

Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
