Comic Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ongoing Compendium Volume One

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

It is a GREAT time to be a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Not only have we been treated to the recent Archie Comics Compendium releases of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures (Volumes 1 and 2 are now available), but the team at IDW Publishing has created a new opportunity for fans to experience the epic ongoing series with massive compendium releases. That’s right, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ongoing Compendium Volume One is now available!

When it launched in 2011, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from IDW Publishing provided readers with a new spin on our favorite pizza-eating heroes and villains, with a massive run that would eventually take them into triple-digit releases. This series laid the groundwork for the 40th-anniversary adventures, with many contributions to modernizing the mythology and characterization while still celebrating the history and unique storytelling that came before. I’ve been a life-long TMNT fan, and I’ve truly enjoyed how this series has allowed the characters to explore new territory while still incorporating many of their classic elements (they didn’t throw the baby out with the bath water on this reinvention).

One of the first things that you will notice about this release is that this book is a BEAST. Featuring the first 50 issues of the 150-issue run that kicked off in 2011, readers will have a chance to dive in with over 1,000 pages of content. The fact that this is just the first of three planned volumes is fantastic, and it will create a great opportunity for fans, new and old, to enjoy this incredible journey that was crafted by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, along with writers Tom Waltz and Sophie Campbell. The 150-issue run included many stellar artists who provided memorable takes on the heroes-in-a-half-shell, including Dan Duncan, Andy Kuhn, Ben Bates, Mateus Santolouco, Cory Smith, and more. Although I had read many of these issues when they were originally released, I quickly realized that I had missed some along the way. While flipping through these pages, I quickly found myself lost in the Turtles’ world, immersed in impressive art and engaging storytelling that easily reinforced my love for these characters. With so many reboots happening these days, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Ongoing Compendium Volume One clearly demonstrates why this particular iteration has managed to stand above the rest.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
