Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: A new uniform for a new era! The future is now with this visionary relaunch of the globally acclaimed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. It’s been ten years since the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers turned in their morphers and went their separate ways. But now they’ve been called back to the legendary Command Center to face a new, terrifying form of a familiar foe: Rita Rabiosa. They may not be teenagers with attitudes anymore, but are they still the same heroes they once were New York Times-bestselling comic book writer Marguerite Bennett (Bombshells, Batwoman) jumps into the Command Center, joined by industry veteran artist Andrew Lee Griffith (Transformers, G.I. Joe), to usher in a new era of Power Rangers, making it perfect for new readers and longtime fans alike!
Review: BACK TO ACTION AND STRONGER THAN BEFORE. The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team returns for a morphenomenal relaunch from BOOM! Studios. Power Rangers, as a franchise, is no stranger to the concept of reinvention, and while we are disappointed by the recent end of Power Rangers Prime, this first issue kicked off a strong start for the original teenagers with attitude. We might not get a ton of information right away, but it sure seems like our heroes from Angel Grove are in for a big new adventure. There’s no doubt that the classic theme song will be playing in your head as you dive into this high-energy debut.

Radiant Black #42
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: As Jack Marlow’s parade marches the streets of Chicago, RADIANT BLACK and HORIZON are set on a collision course from which neither will emerge unscathed! Don’t miss this 5th anniversary issue with an ending that once again will change RADIANT BLACK forever!
Review: Whenever someone asks for my top reading recommendation, it’s always a very simple answer: Radiant Black. This creative team has a knack for consistently elevating the superhero genre with each new release, and the level of creativity and innovation makes the series a monthly must-read.
The minds behind Radiant Black have been teasing that this issue has major ramifications for our favorite characters moving forward, and I can say without hesitation that the book (and the last page in particular) completely lives up to the MASSIVE-verse name. The audible gasp that came from my body when I got to that page was quite loud, and I’m beyond thrilled about this extremely clever development. They say to write what you know, and the grounded connections to Chicago help to make every page more vibrant and alive (thanks for staying away from my suburb gang). Marshall’s evolution since the Catalyst War has been incredibly surprising (I will admit, I voted for Nathan). The character growth and interpersonal dynamics with his supporting cast have worked out better than I could have expected, and the intentionality behind his actions and concern over Horizon have brought us to an interesting tipping point.
No spoilers, but you really need to get this issue as soon as possible. Seriously.

Rook: Exodus #10
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: Introducing STAG, the vengeful Deer Warden… and he will stop at nothing to drive his katana blade through the murderous BLOODHOUND! But ROOK, DIRE WOLF, and the other Wardens need BLOODHOUND to repair the planet Exodus’ failing World Engine. If they survive STAG’s all-out assault, can they save a doomed planet?
Review: When the original trio of Ghost Machine titles debuted, I found it very hard to pick a favorite between Rook, Redcoat, and Geiger. Each of the stories offered something unique to the world of comics and played in very different spaces, but over time, Rook: Exodus has overtaken the others as my top pick. The dynamics between the Wardens and their animal counterparts have created some compelling interactions, and each issue has kept me on the edge of my seat. The World Engine has been failing since the beginning of this book, but each passing chapter feels more dire with a ticking clock looming overhead. This latest story adds more pieces to the larger sci-fi puzzle, and I’m already itching to get the next issue in my hands. I love how Rook: Exodus continues to expand through its engaging world-building approach, and now is the perfect time for readers to jump on board with this series.

The Lucky Devils #8
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: We are now in Hell’s deepest level but one, the Eighth Circle, reserved for Fraudsters — the Big Old Liars. Rebellious devil Collar reveals his endgame: using his human Cam to turn our world into the Devils’ Playground! Rake is on the edge of ascending to the highest levels of demonic society… if she can make her human Starr the Worst Person On EarthTM. It’s mayhem of the highest order as THE LUCKY DEVILS rockets toward its epic conclusion!
Review: The penultimate issue takes the insanity to the next level of Hell! That’s right, things manage to get even crazier as The Lucky Devils heads towards the grand finale, and I genuinely love the fact that I have no idea how this is going to conclude. Kudos to the creative team for keeping us eagerly guessing all the way until the end.

What If…Uncanny X-Men #1
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: WHAT IF… CYCLOPS HAD STAYED WITH MADELYNE PRYOR? Imagine a world where Madelyne Pryor, the Goblin Queen, had survived the Inferno. What would have happened if Cyclops had saved her soul? What would have happened if he and Maddie had raised their son, Nathan Summers? What would that world look like? And why would that be the most terrible thing to happen to mutantdom and Earth itself?
Review: What a perfect way to celebrate What If’s 50th Anniversary. Not only did we get a classic approach to the What If narrative, but readers will get to experience a significant amount of X-Men storytelling in this unique narrative. I’m even more excited by this next wave of books after reading this first installment.

The Deadman #1
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: THE ALL-STAR CREATORS OF 2025’S HIT MINISERIES SUPERMAN: THE KRYPTONITE SPECTRUM (AND THE ONGOING HORROR ANTHOLOGY ICE CREAM MAN) ARE BACK AT DC COMICS TO LIFT YOUR SPIRITS! The Deadman enters the Next Level! In the millisecond following his murder, the soul of shifty circus aerialist Boston Brand was commandeered by the goddess Rama Kushna, who deputized the erstwhile performer’s ghost with a sacred spectral assignment: the Custodian of All Souls! Now Brand floats — begrudgingly — through this bluegreen purgatory we call Earth, upholding the Laws of Spiritual Math and protecting humanity from evil — even if they can’t see or hear him. Open up to this new era of DC’s most lively deceased superhero — the Deadman — in a story about life, death, and everything in between… replete with paranormal activity, possessions, and a profusion of other poignant peculiarities.
Review: Of all of the Next Level books, the journey of Boston Brand might be the quirkiest. The former circus performer turned Custodian of All Souls is in for an interesting supernatural experience in this new launch from DC, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it after the first issue. The paranormal and magical aspects are definitely intriguing, the visuals were extremely vivid and well-suited for the genre, but I think I will need more time with the Deadman before I make a call on this book as it was a lot to absorb. Overall, I’m enjoying the mystical focus that this and Zatanna have taken with the All In – Next Level initiative, and I think this series has a lot of potential.

Supergirl: Survive #1
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: ETHAN PARKER, GRIFFIN SHERIDAN, AND ROD REIS TAKE SUPERGIRL ON A NEW ELSEWORLDS JOURNEY! Kara Zor-El lives a life of small problems. How are you supposed to hold a floppy little baby like her new cousin Kal? Who should she ask to the spring formal? And when will her father and her uncle Jor-El stop squabbling? But the planet Krypton has big problems… like the militaristic dictator Zod ruthlessly crushing dissent and threatening to unleash the planet’s most dangerous weapons on the opposition. And when things boil over and Krypton begins to burn, Kara and her infant cousin will find themselves trapped together in a prototype rocket, struggling to survive in a hostile universe that doesn’t care if they live or die… and which might prefer the latter! Breakout writers Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan (Eisner Award nominee Kill Your Darlings) join visionary artist Rod Reis (New Mutants) to tell the story of teenage Kara and infant Kal, sent on their journey through the stars together, not apart… that is, as long as Kara can keep him alive!
Review: The fact that we are getting new Elseworlds and What If stories this week is utterly fantastic. I love the exploration of what could have been in the world of comics, and Supergirl: Survive is a creative exploration of Kara and Kal-El’s story that has remained untouched…until now. The cover alone should hook you (the interior art is equally as stunning), but this is a truly impressive launch for the Super-family. We’ve never seen a Supergirl/Superman story like this, and if this issue is any indication, it has the makings of something truly iconic.

X-Men ’97: Season Two #1
Rating:

by Matt Sernaker
Official Synopsis: Extinction-day has come and gone, and your favorite X-Men are lost in time! Spinning out of the X-Men ’97 hit TV series, we follow the X-Men left behind in a world that hunts and hates mutantkind! Can they survive? And just where — or when — are the X-Men now?! Leading directly from the end of season one to the start of the upcoming season 2, no X-MEN ’97 fan can miss this one!
Review: If you weren’t already excited about the upcoming return of X-Men ‘97, you will be after reading this book! Fans have waited years to see more of the expanded animated universe, and this issue delivers with a multitude of X-Men appearances. The art style perfectly emulates the stylings of the show, and the creative team demonstrates a clear understanding of everything that makes this show so special.
