PS2 Game Review: Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World

In Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World there are new “dragon missions” that are based on different moments from the anime. Not all the missions are fighting related, there are challenge missions like running to the end of Snake Way under a time limit and exploring an area looking for “gate” or check points, which is also under a time limit. Of course, there are battle based missions, and they are difficult. It doesn’t really matter what level you’re playing at, this game is a challenge and it may take you several tries to complete a mission. Now, this is the first time I’ve played a DBZ game for the PS2, so I found the controls really confusing and I didn’t like the lack of basic training. You get to use “ESS” or “Exciting Skill System”. Those skills can be used to customize a character by adding them to their skill tray. Unlike the previous DBZ games, you can purchase upgrades for the skills.

Battles are hard and could be confusing if you are new to the DBZ games. It takes a while to get used to the controls. These are fighting sequences, so there isn‘t much to them. But, the graphics are really nice. I love it when an attack changes the terrain. There is also a nice 3D/360-ness to it all, instead of merely a boring side view. You actually get to move forward, backward, left and right. The combos and the special attacks are cool as well.

Remember, this is Dragon Ball Z, so it has it’s weird moments. For example, during the loading scenes, Goku is climbing up a tower and you can actually press buttons and/or move the analog stick to make him go up the tower. The missions map has interesting elevator music that seems out of place (it really makes me feel like I’m standing in an elevator).

Game play as a whole is nicely inconsistent. By that I mean it has variety with the missions. You don’t get tired from doing all battles or challenge missions, you get both. There is a little taste of an RPG, but just a hint. There is a nice selection of characters you can choose from once they’ve been unlocked (which would give you 40+ characters), again, keeping the game fresh. The graphics aren’t much of an excitement, they’re pretty basic for PS2 anime game.

Worth it?: Being a series collector myself, I know this game is not just something you’d buy to support it the series, this is a game to play! But, if you are new to the series, then I’d start with an earlier one. There is little (if any) training in this game, and it happens to be the last in the PS2 series. But if you are like many of the people I know who freaked when I said I’ve played it, then it is completely worth getting.

Rating: ★★★☆☆
