Blu-ray Review: Election

The 1999 film Election is now available on Blu-ray!

Election, based off the book of the same name is about a subject that many of us all know and have grown to love/hate over the years. High School and the many politics that govern it. We are introduced to Matthew Brodrick who sadly is not playing Ferris Buller, but a teacher, Jim McAllister, who fails at life yet takes such joy at working with the school and the students there. Reese Witherspoon plays Tracey, a Senior in High School who has had a secret affair with a member of the teaching staff (her actions led to the staff member getting fired). Reese Witherspoon can definitely play a crazy, vindictive, sex crazed co-ed.

Well that staff member was a friend of McAllister’s and when Tracey announces that she is going to run for President of the student government, he decides to get even. He convinces a jock named Paul (Chris Klein) to enter the race and oppose her. When the race starts going Tracey’s way, McAllister takes steps to ensure she looses.

The movie is filled with all the scandal, sex, and lies of any election… but in a High School setting. Broderick did a good job in this film as well, but wasn’t his best performance.

Special Feature
If you noticed, it does say special feature. As in singular. Unfortunately the Blu-ray release is severally lacking in special features.

-Audio Commentary by Director Alexander Payne

-1080p Video

-English 5.0 Dolby TrueHD Audio

Overall
Although this is a fun movie, it is surprising how little was included in the release. This movie just has the single audio commentary. I would have hoped for some additional features. If you haven’t seen the movie and you are converting to Blu-ray then you might be inclined to get this version.

ComicsOnline gives Election 3.5 out of 5 hopes for more features.
