Blu-ray Review: Futurama Into the Wild Green Yonder

Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder, the 4th (and possibly final?) Futurama Direct to DVD release will be available on Feb 24th on DVD and Blu-ray!

Story
Like all of the Futurama movies, the structure of the film is a bit sporadic at times. There are three major plot-lines that happen during the film (please understand that the following review contains spoilers but also might seem a little confusing…but it is the chain of events in the film…so I will do the best I can).

Yonder starts out with the Planet Express team visiting Mars Vegas (on Mars). We learn that The Wong Family is ready to destroy Vegas only to create New Vegas, bigger and better than ever. In the process Leela questions the impact that the construction will have on the eco-system and starts taking a pro-active stance. Leela joins the Feminista rebellion movement which wants to stop Mr. Wong at all costs. The Feministas try to stop Wong and during which Fry becomes injured by one of their medallions. The medallion gets impaled in his head and he starts hearing other people’s thoughts! He tries find ways to use his new found abilities and decides to enter the poker tournament in New Vegas! Meanwhile, Bender is enjoying himself in New Vegas and falls for a Gearotic Dancer named Fanny, who happens to be the wife of the Robot Mafia. Bender enters into the poker tournament to earn enough money to escape with Fanny, only to be hunted down and shot at by the Robot Mafia.

So where does the movie’s title come into play? Well we learn that millions of years ago a green life giving force traveled through the universe, starting life on many worlds. Since this time the Green Light has had little effect…but now that life force has returned and started a new eco-system on a violet star that is on the verge of destruction thanks to Wong.

Special Features

* Audio Commentary by Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Michael Rowe, Lee Supercinski, Patric M. Verrone and Peter Avanzino

* Storyboard Animatic: Into the Wild Green Yonder, Part 1

* Featurette: Matt Groening and David X. Cohen in Space!

* Docudramarama: “How We Make Futurama So Good”

* “Louder! Louder!”: The Acting Technique of Penn Jillette

* Golden Stinkers: A Treasury of Deleted Scenes

* How To Draw Futurama In 10 Very Difficult Steps

* 3D Models with Animator Discussion

* Bender’s Movie Theater Etiquette

* Zapp Brannigan’s Guide to Making Love at a Woman

Overall
For what could be the last of the Futurama series I was hoping for a bit more. There were very few cameos (short of Penn and Teller and Snoop Dogg). Bender gets some amazing moments, especially with the Robot Mafia. Fry’s story unfortunately not very funny…just random. Leela’s proactive stance to save the environment was nothing really new for the character…but still provided some great moments (Leela vs The VP).

There is a very big question left unanswered as to our heroes fate at the end of the film (like seriously, total cliffhanger). Here’s to hoping that this is not the final adventure of the Planet Express crew…and that these 4 movies are just the beginning of something new!

ComicsOnline gives Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder 3.5 out of 5 Violet Stars.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
