DVD Review: Reaper Season 2

When it seemed like things couldn't get any worse for Sam, his father is killed by a gang of demons out for blood. Now, Sam must deal with his father's death and the revelation that his REAL father might be the one person he despises more than anyone: THE DEVIL! Sam, Sock, Ben, Andi and the Devil are all back for more action and comedy in newly released Season Two of Reaper! This season Sam had a lot to deal with: trying to get his job back at the Workbench, escaping from his deal with the devil, watching his friends date demons, fixing his relationship with his girlfriend Andy, and watching his father come back to life as a demon.

Reaper was given a second season pickup of 13 episodes. Highlights include:

Episode IV: A New Hope-
Sam, Sock and Ben return from their cross country roadtrip to find that they have lost their jobs, their apartments, and their girlfriends. Now they must work to regain all they have lost and figure out a new place to live. When Sock tries to move back home he meets his new stepfather and stepsister. Things start looking up for Sam when he learns that a soul has escaped from Hell…AND his deal with the devil! Can Sam convince this soul to help him and his own deal?

Dirty Sexy Mongul-
The newest escaped soul is a Mongul! Sam and the guys loose track of the new soul only to find that in a matter of days he has adapted to the 21st century and is now a suit wearing, bluetooth using businessman! Additionally, Ted screws up at the Workbench and is let go from his position…but guess who gets a promotion? ANDI!

The Favorite-
Well it turns out that Sam isn't the Devil's only son: Enter Morgan. The Devil wants Sam to help Morgan get up to speed with the soul hunting business so that someday Morgan can take over as the ruler of hell.

Underbelly-
Sock decides to make his move on his stepsister while he and the gang are hunting for an escaped soul in a small ghost town. Will Sock finally get what he has been dreaming of? Andi continues to fear that Sam is slipping to the dark side…and enjoying his job with the devil.

To Sprong, With Love-
Michael McDonald guest stars as Sam's former highschool teacher. When a soul of a former student returns and is out to get revenge against his former teacher, Sam must save the man that they hated most in highschool. In order to save a life, Sam and the guys decide to kidnap their teacher in order to keep him safe. As if this wasn't enough to keep the boys occupied, Sock is given the opportunity to be the new icon for the Work Bench: "Wrenchy Bench". But when Sock takes his new character too far there might be some reprecussions.

The Devil and Sam Oliver-
After learning the secret incantation that can force the Devil into a challenge, Sam must figure out what he could beat the Devil at. After a long drunken debate with his closest friends, Sam comes to the realization that he never misses at the drinking game Quarters. Now Sam finally has a chance to escape from his deal once and for all…but it seems that divine forces are at work and that Sam might not be allowed to break this deal after all. But Sam is not the only one with something at stake, because Andi has offered up her soul as collateral! This episode serves as the series finale…but doesn't quite bring closure to the series. It was a great episode and it is very unfortunate that we will never quite know what happens next in the world of Reaper.

Special Features-
"The Devil Made Me Do It"- A Look Back At The Making Of Reaper- So when I watch Special Features the first thing I go for are the Making Of specials. I really enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes antics of the cast and crew and learning about the set itself. We get to learn more about the Workbench and the level of detail that went into building this massive set. The part that was surprising was that this featurette was recorded during Season 1 for what seems to be the Season 1 boxset…It ends with "Season One of Reaper is now available on DVD"…This disappointed me. Why was I disappointed? Well even though this was new content that we hadn't seen before, it wasn't a look at all of the crazy stuff the guys got to do during this new season. Don't get me wrong, this is a great featurette. It was well written and entertaining all the way through, but I just was expecting something related to the current season or at the very least a mix of the two seasons…

-Gag Reel

-Deleted Scenes- There are about 4 Deleted Scenes included on the DVD, and they are more of Extended versions of the scenes we have already seen.

-Wide Screen Presentation

-English Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound

Overall-
I loved this show. I made sure to tune in every week and watch it while it was on the air. I couldn't get enough of Sam and Sock and their unending antics while trying to escape from the Devil. Ray Wise as the Devil continued to impress. It was very disappointing to learn that the show was coming back as a midseason replacement…and that it got very little publicity. Many people missed that this show was back on the air and missed several episodes. If you didn't get to see all 13 episodes of the season then I urge you to get this set. It felt like the CW didn't really care about this show continuing. I wish we could learn the final fate of Sam and Andi but unfortunately we will never know.

ComicsOnline gives the Second Season of Reaper 4 out of 5 series we wanted to see renewed.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
