DVD Review: Venus Viruses Virus, The Complete Series

"Cute; yes indeed. Lethal; Most Defiantly!"

There has been an increase in Viruses (a sub demonic creature who feeds on the souls of humans who can see them), and there is one group out there to fight them, Venus. This small group is made of a hardened woman, an old man, a scared pre-teenage girl and what appears to be a 5 year old girl. They all have their own special abilities and are very good at using them, but two of them are more connected than they know and are the key to the fate of the world.

HIGHLIGHTS

In an ordinary Antique Shop, an odd group of people work to defend the Human race against the demonic world. A Virus is a Human soul that has progressed to a rep-demon state. It searches the world for those humans that can see them and will attack to try and devour their soul. Sumire Takahana and Lucia Nahashi are the main protagonists and both have their own secrets. The group has developed an antivirus, when it is injected in the demonic spirit it is fatal and the Virus is destroyed. Sumire has the power to become a living antivirus when injected with the chemical antivirus, she then goes into an insane state and will also attack anyone around her. Lucia keeps her left eye covered due to the fact that it also has the power to destroy anything in its path.

Both of these young women also have an unknown connection that drives them to fight even harder when together and for each other. They are often at odds and their personalities are the polar opposites. They are a formidable force and complement each other's weakness.

The series spends the first four episodes telling individual stories regarding the destruction Viruses. As the episodes continue, the plot becomes static and revolves around someone from Lucia's past that is trying to remake the world by destroying the current reality and remaking it in his own ideal way through the use of the demonic world.

The last few episodes tell the true story and provide for the majority of the drama in the series. There are several entertaining battles that pit the girls against some formidable demons, or at least they appear as if they are demons. The ending is a real twist that made a good deal of the series come together.

OVERALL

Venus Versus Virus started off very slow and seemed to be lacking a solid plot line in the first four episodes. Once the plot was established it began to redeem itself and develop the characters. They were still a little flat and much of the settings felt forced. This does not mean I did not enjoy the series. In fact, once the plot started to move in about episode 6, the story began to have some real feeling and picked up the pace without loosing the characters personality and strengths. The last three episodes did a great job of tying the series together and explained many of the gaps that were left open early on.

This twelve episode series was perfect for the story it wanted to tell. But there should have been a little more of a peek or introduction of the true villains earlier on in the story. I would think many possible fans were lost after the third episode thinking that the series was just the same thing each week. I was delighted by the unexpected ending and was touched by the unseen bond between Sumire and Lucia. This Anime should be give a chance and if you walked away form it early in the offerings, you might want to revisit again and discover the real story that develops.
