DVD Review: One Piece Season 2 Third Voyage

I have been waiting for this volume of One Piece for some time now. Not only because we are back to what had been aired on television, but because I really wanted to see how well the voices of the characters introduced would be done. I was happy with the change.

Highlights

This volume starts right where the last one ended, with Nami sick and some guy standing on water. I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. This volume introduces 3 new Devil Fruits: those being the Munch Munch (Allows the eater to eat anything.), the Ox Ox fruit (User is able to turn into an ox or an ox hybrid), and the Human Human fruit (allows the user to give the user the ability to turn into a human form or human hybrid). Tony Tony Chopper explains a bit of the Grand Line, which is a nice touch. When the Straw Hats plus Vivi make it to an island to cure Nami, they come across an island that is covered in snow and find the only doctor on the island is a witch.

The fights in this volume were really good, it was really enjoyable to watch Luffy take on King Wapol (who has the Munch Munch fruit) and there were great touching moments where I actually had to fight back a tear. Mostly this was from Chopper’s background, as it was very well handled. The Volume ends with the crew finally heads off towards Alabasta, Vivi’s home country, and a mysterious man in black who somehow knows Luffy.

Overview
I really enjoyed this volume. There was a lot of humor in it. A great example is when Luffy and Sanji are taking Nami up a tall mountain and Sanji and Luffy are arguing while dodging a killer rabbit. Another is when Luffy and Sanji meet Chopper for the first time, they chase after him trying to eat him. It looks like they aren’t even aware that its there till the end. Even with humor there is a touching moment when a character dies during a flashback and has the song “Ave Maria” play. I’ve heard this song several times before, but this is the only time I’ve been so moved when it played. And the fight scene with Chopper was just awesome, if only to see the little guy kick butt. Luffy’s fight with Wapol was another great part. But the clincher was watching Chopper take out a duo who even Sanji had trouble fighting.
