2009 Nintendo Wii Video Game Gift Guide

With the mass of video game titles pouring in over the holiday season, it can be hard to wade through the shovel ware and find the treasures hidden among the trash.  We here at ComicsOnline have done all the hard work for you and provided a list of the best Nintendo Wii games available to scribble on your Christmas list.  With our help, you’ll spend less time fighting soccer moms for parking spaces and more time with the best games of the season.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Nintendo knows that if they stamp Mario on anything, it will sell.  This years Mario game, New Super Mario Bros Wii, is and incredibly fun and nostalgic title.  New abilities like the ice flower and penguin suit offer new ways to tackle the trademark P-switch and coin based puzzles that are part of the franchise. Fans of Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo will see an incredible similarity here and that is my only complaint. After seeing how beautiful Super Mario Galaxy was, it’s sad that Nintendo clearly took a step back graphically for this title.  The inclusion of multiplayer is the real reason this game shines.  Supporting four-players on the same screen (Mario, Luigi, and two toadstools) players are able to assist each other in the story mode by reaching that last level coin, or battle it out for the most coins. Prepare to lose a lot of lives fighting over coins, but be prepared laugh your ass off in the process.  New Super Mario Bros. Wii is by far the most fun you can have on the Wii this season.

Wii Sports Resort
Those wanting more of what you loved about the original Wii sports, (and this is every Wii owner) will be happy with what Wii Sports Resort offers. Looking to innovate the wii-mote controls further, Nintendo has included the new Wii MotionPlus accessory in the packaging. This new peripheral has additional sensors which allow fore more refined controls and better aiming capabilities.  There are 12 new(ish) mini games here, most notable being the Wave Race like Power Cruising and the Sword Play, (You use light sabers!) will keep you playing for hours.  This should and most likely will find its way into every Wii owner’s home this Christmas.  Let’s just hope Lucas Arts uses the MotionPlus accessory in the next Star Wars game.

Rabbids Go Home
As far as Quirky games go, this one takes the cake.  Placing you in the role of Rayman’s past nemesis, The Rabbids Go home has you controlling a shopping cart as it barrels through the city accumulating stuff. That stuff, of which there are many varieties, is used to get the Rabbids to the moon so they can finally sleep without being bothered.  As ridiculous as its premise sounds, Rabbids Go Home has an addictive play style very similar to Katamari Damacy.  The Rabbids themselves are a funny lot to watch and will inspire many laughs as you play through this one.  Players looking for an original and incredibly funny experience should put this on their list.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
Capcom’s follow-up to Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, is a “light gun” shooter controlling very similar to Sega’s House of the Dead series. Using the wii-mote as your weapon, you’ll gun down zombies and a slew of other monstrosities brought about by the Umbrella corporations many viruses. The Darkside Chronicles continues with a story that includes new elements as well as some borrowed from Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica.  There aren’t many games out there that utilize this type of on-rails shooting mechanic since arcades are pretty much dead. Thankfully, Wii owners get another classic with this title.  Be sure to ask Santa for this one.

Metroid Prime Trilogy
I don’t really have to spend a lot of time defending this one.  Nintendo’s reboot of the Metroid series back on the Gamecube combined FPS dynamics with platform mechanics and a deep story telling experience.  It gave fans a new perspective on one of its most successful franchises and proved that the big N is capable of taking chances and succeeding.  Released back in August, this trilogy includes Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echos and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.  All of the titles now have enhanced wii-mote controls and you can get it all for one low price.  This collection is a must have for any Nintendo Wii owner.

Honorable Mention:

Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3
Games based on anime franchises are much like games based on movies franchises, they generally suck.  Naruto Shippuden is an enjoyable, easy to play, and surprisingly deep fighting game that will appeal to hardcore fighters as well as fans of the show. Taking place during the Shippuden timeline, players can choose from every recognizable character in this universe, once you’ve unlocked them through the in-game store. The standard wii-mote controls are a bit lacking and force you to wiggle it repeatedly to form attacks. This can become frustrating very quickly.  Those that have invested in a classic controller will find most of the moves easy to pull off if you’ve played any other fighting game. Naruto Shippuden: Clash of Ninja Revolution 3 will most likely be overlooked by the majority this season, but those looking to mix up with a great fighter should add this to their holiday picks.
