DVD Review: Justice League The Complete Animated Series

When the world needs help, humanity turns to the Justice League! The combined might of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter stop the evil of the DC Universe in 91 thrilling adventures, now available in one complete series set.

"Secret Origins": Watch as Earth's Heroes come together to stop an impending invasion from Mars!

"The Enemy Below": Aquaman is in trouble and only the Justice League can help him! Gone is the short haired, classic rendition of our aquatic hero, only to be replaced with the long haired, grizzly version from the 90's. This episode features a new version of the story of how Aquaman loses his hand!

"Injustice for All": Lex Luthor makes his first JL apperance as he learns that he will soon die from Kryptonite poisioning! He gathers The Shade, Solomon Grundy, Star Sapphire, Copperhead, The Ultra-Humanite, and Cheetah to take down Superman and his new group. Lex forgot to include the Joker on his roster, and when the Clown Prince of Crime feels left out, things really start to get interesting.

"Twlight": Darkseid and Brainiac team up to take revenge on Superman for the events from Superman: The Animated Series. The team joins forces with the New Gods to stop Darkseid from destroying the universe!

"Starcrossed": Hawkman and the rest of the Thanagarians arrive on Earth in this three part saga! Startling revelations about Hawkgirl come to light and we learn that her arrival on Earth wasn't as much of an accident as once believed. This episode features the best moment of the series demonstrating how once again, Batman knows everything. The Flash is hesitant to reveal their secret identities to each other and Bruce has a fantastic bit of dialogue.

"The Return": Amazo returns to Earth and now the greatest heroes must join forces with Lex Luthor to create a weapon to stop this nearly omnipotent villain. With the help of the Atom, Lex rushes against the clock to find a way to stop the advanced android.

"Ultimatium": The Ultimen make their first apperance! This new team containing newly updated version of classic SuperFriends characters like Long Shadow (Apache Chief), Wind Dragon (Samurai), Juice (Black Vulcan), Downpour and Shifter (The Wonder Twins). There is more than meets the eye with this new team as they have a mysterious connection to Amanda Waller and Cadmus.

"The Once and Future Thing": Batman Beyond returns to the DC Animated Universe! A time traveling villain starts messing with history and Batman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman are caught in the crossfire. These three heroes must team up with heroes from different times to face off against this villain and fix history. These two episodes also feature cameos by Old Bruce Wayne, Warhawk and Old Static Shock from Batman Beyond, and Jonah Hex and Batlash from DC's Old West.

"Task Force X": The Suicide Squad make their animated apperance! Cadmus recruits the Clock King (last seen in Batman: TAS), Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and Plastique to steal a mystical suit of armor from the Justice League.

"Question Authority", "Flashpoint", "Panic in the Sky", "Divided We Fall"- These four episodes tie together into the best storyline of the series. Many things have been happening during this season of JLU and the Question begins to put the pieces together. What has Cadmus been doing behind the scenes? What is Lex Luthor up to? Why is the world suddenly scared of the Justice League? This all leads up to the climatic battle with Lex and his new ally in "Divided We Fall".

"Epilogue": This episode acts as a series finale for Batman Beyond, and a fitting season finale for the Cadmus Storyline of Justice League Unlimited. This episode was meant to be the culmination of years of storylines from Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond and Justice League. We learn the fates of Terry McGinnis, Bruce Wayne, Amanda Waller and the future version of the JLU. The final scene of the episode was meant to mirror the opening to Batman: The Animated Series episode "On Leather Wings" as the series producers were not sure if they would be getting a pickup for another season.

Overall:
Justice League proved that DC can perfectly handle an ensemble cast of well known heroes and do justice (pun intended) to each of the characters. The development and connections that came from the episodes listed above are just some of the many highlights from this series. The connections and throwbacks to past animated projects are great for fans and help to further establish the history of these characters. This set also contains an exclusive bonus disc with a feature called "Unlimited Reserve: Exploring the Depths of the DC Universe". The only complaint I have about the new Superman and Justice League sets is the inconsistency in the packaging. All three of the packages for Batman, Superman and Justice League Complete Series sets have a totally different look and thus don't display quite as nicely next to each other. I would have hoped that these sets would mirror the incredible packaging from Batman, but unfortunately, Batman cannot sit on the shelf next to its counterparts. This however, should not detract anyone from the purchase of the sets, as they are the cheapest releases of the series to date. If you are a fan of Bruce Timm, Batman, Superman, Justice League or any of these heroes, you must get this release.

ComicsOnline gives Justice League: The Complete Series  5 out of 5 finales to the DCAU.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
