Manga Review: Yu-Gi-Oh! R, Volume 1

“Duel start!”

Shortly after Kiba’s Battle City torment, there is a disturbance in the Kiba Corp computer system. While Kiba is in america a member from Industrial Illusions, Asia division hacked the kiba Corp computer main frame. Later when Yugi and his friends were at school, the man who hack Kiba Corp, Yako Tenma, came floating through a school desk. Now Yako didn’t really float through a desk, he was using the Kiba Corp’s Solid Vision system to project a hologram of his self. Yako only wanted one thing, to take on the “King of Games”, Yugi Mutou. As they started, Yugi summoned one of his Egyptian God cards, Slifer the Sky Dragon. Yugi thought that he was the only person with God cards, but he was wrong. When Maximillion Pegasus made the three Egyptian God cards, he made more, the Wicked Avatar. The Wicked Avatar isn’t an Egyptian God card, but it is an Evil God card. Instead of using the full wrath of the Wicked Avatar, Yako left in the middle if the duel, but he didn’t leave alone. Yako took Téa, one of Yugi’s Friends, with with him.

Highlights
Yugi’s only goal is to get Téa back, but it won’t be easy. Yako hired thirteen of expert dullest called Card Professors. Card Professors are hired by the “Prize Mach” in America. Each Card Professor also specializes in a certain type of monster, like defence, vampires, bugs, and robots. Yako put each Card Professor in charge of a part of the Kiba Corp HQ, and they where also given a key card that opens the next door but if Yugi loses, he must give them the card that contains Téa’s soul. After Yugi’s second battle Joie set off a pitfall trap and plunged down to the bowels of Kiba Corp, and Tristan jumped down with him. Luckily Joie had borrowed one of the Card Professors duel disks and in that trap that he has sprung, there was a Card Professor. Yugi is strongest with hid friends, but can Yugi still beet his enemies with out his friends? (I don’t see how they would help him duel).

Overall
Yu-Gi-Oh! R is different than the other Yu-Gi-Oh stories I’ve seen. The jerk, Kiba isn’t in it, which is odd because normally even if Kiba isn’t the main jerk he is still there being a jerk. also the duels are very short, they don’t last more than a few pages and each person only plays a few monsters. I would like it if the duels where a bit longer, because some of he Card Professors are rely cool, but they are just gone like that. All of the characters have their original Japanese name, Joey Wheeler is Katsua Jonouchi, Téa Gardner is Anzu Mazaki, and so on and so fourth. For those of you are only familiar with  the American names there is a helpful little Cast & Story in the front of the book. In the back of the book there is a Master of the Cards card list, with all the cards that are used in the book and if they are in the TCG or just in the book. The biggest perks in Yu-Gi-Oh! R is the card that comes with it, Van’Dalgyon the Dark Dragon Lord (ATK/2800 DEF/2500), the card has nothing to do with the story but is wicked awesome.

ComicsOnline gives Yu-Gi-Oh! R, Volume 1, 5 out of 5 American Card Professors
