DVD Review: Joe Rogan: Talking Monkeys in Space

Gray hairs on your balls is your body sending you a message.

Overview

Most stand-up comic routines I’ve seen in the past either sway in the direction of extreme vulgarity and profanity or head toward the more family friendly PG rated stuff.  Joe Rogan bounces between the two with wild abandon and it’s pretty interesting.  Watching him go on about smoking pot only to turn around and talk about what it’s like having a baby is not only funny, it’s borderline genius.  There is something for everyone here.

His constant bashing of Dr. Phil is completely awesome.  It’s nice to know that someone else out there thinks he’s a crackpot.  His bit with the guy who got caught masturbating made me laugh 'til I was red in the face.  Other bits, like why getting old sucks and how the T-Rex died are also great.  In addition to these, Rogan provides plenty of memorable material that will have you rehashing it to your friends for a long time.

His entire act is incredibly short and oh so sweet, clocking in at 38 minutes; it’s over before you know it.  After that, he has the crew set up microphones at the edge of the stage and has a Q & A with the crowd.  It’s entirely different from the comedy show and Joe gets pretty serious at times throughout.  He’s incredibly intelligent and descriptive with some of the answers to the far-fetched questions that the crowd brings up.  His explanation on how he does stand up is genuine and awesome.

Special Features

Joe Rogan: Talking Monkeys in Space comes as a single disc DVD collection with the feature and the following:

  • Talking Monkeys in Columbus featurette
  • Behind the Scenes featurette

The behind the scenes featurette runs about ten minutes and it focuses on Rogan’s life on the road with his friends.  It provides a little insight into his career and has some small interview portions with him as well.  The Talking Monkeys in Columbus featurette is another short one with Rogan filming a Spike TV special in Ohio.  It has a lot of similar stuff that’s in the other featurette, providing more details of his life on the road and his friends.

Overall

Joe Rogan is a fantastic stand-up comic.  His routine is unique and offers a different perspective on all of his material.  It’s just way too short.  With special features thrown in, the whole disc runs just over an hour.  It’s all great stuff, but there’s just not enough of it here.

ComicsOnline gives Joe Rogan: Talking Monkeys in Space 4 out of 5 pot stashes.
